I'm pretty sure I have a bad U Joint. How much is this gonna cost for just the parts, and how much if I have a shop do it? From what I've heard it's not hard to fix - any pointers???
not hard at all. just did one on mine and it cost me 14 bucks from advance. common hand tools can be used to take them out. needle nose pliers for the small clips and if you have a c-clamp it would make life very very easy. if not a socket about the same size as the u joint itself can be used with the proper amount of motivation and a big enough hammer
Parts stores loan out Ball joint presses, which can be used for U-joints (it is a big C-clamp with adapters). I have bent up regular clamps on bad joints.
It is not hard to do. Be sure to index all parts of the DS before removing or taking it apart. You can also do the joint with the shaft in the car (that is how I do them).
Good luck.
Bring back from the dead: What is a good quality brand U joint? Advance carries Neapco Universal Joint (Bruce Force heavy duty) or GMB U-Joint (Performance). I just accuired a FMS D/S and before this goes in I'm swaping out U joints.
I was actually just about to go down to my local parts store and pick up two u-joints. Cause when I come to a stop no matter if i'm in a gear or neutral, i get a noise that sounds like you are shaking a spray paint can. I looked at my front joint and there is A LOT of play between the cap and the yoke. So figured it's time to change them both.
