USC is No. 1 in AP Top 25 college poll

By RALPH D. RUSSO, AP College Football Writer 14 minutes ago

NEW YORK - After a season of chasing, Southern California is again the team being chased. And that's just the way coach Pete Carroll and the Trojans like it. For the third time in the past four years, USC begins the college football season No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25.

"It's exactly where we hope and expect to be," Carroll said. "It's a symbol of what we're all about."

Southern California received 62 of 65 first-place votes and 1,622 points from a panel of media members. USC easily outdistanced No. 2 LSU in the poll released Saturday. The Tigers received two first-place votes and 1,511 points. They haven't started a season ranked this high since 1959, when they were preseason No. 1.

No. 3 West Virginia received the other first-place vote. The Mountaineers have never been ranked higher in the preseason. No. 4 Texas and Michigan round out the top five, and defending champion Florida is sixth.

USC has been the country's top program since 2002, going 59-6 with two national championships and a near-miss. This season, the Trojans expect to walk away from the BCS national championship game in New Orleans with the crystal football.

I hope like hell they win the BCS and someone other team stakes a claim for #1 and really gets the tro-janes all pissed off

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070818...e_fb_poll_7;_ylt=ArDzsgry5ffDL.iVWyyFeT4E1vAI

Now, I don't really follow college football, but this article touts their record of 59-6... 59-6 against whom? Don't they play in one of the weakest conferences in the BCS? I would love to see USC get thrust in the middle of the SEC, where every division game is like a bowl game

The SEC is a scary place, I would never want to play in that division.

They have a good defense but playing against lesser opponents will do that. Their WR's is where they are suspect with the loss of 2 starters. LSU had the #4 defense in the country last season and most of that against SEC competition. They return nearly the entire defense and the ones that left had good back-ups. LSU defense will be scary this season.

LSU had a real good defense last year and as you mentioned they didnt lose many people on that side of te ball, so this year they will be alot better.... that SEC conference is a scary one to play in also

Oh please dont give me that junk. Its impossible to legitimatly argue that USC hasnt been the best college program over the past 5 years.

USC Final Finish AP Poll
2002 - 5th
2003 - 1st (2nd USA Today)
2004 - 1st
2005 - 2nd
2006 - 4th

LSU Final Finish AP Poll
2002 - 26th
2003 - 2nd (1st USA Today)
2004 - 16th
2005 - 6th
2006 - 3rd

But good try

It looks like Florida, LSU, USC and OU will be the top 4 this year. Those teams are tearing it up.

Honestly, if I had to rank the teams right now they would be ranked as follows:

1. LSU
2. Florida
3. OU
4. USC

Not because I "dislike" USC. I really do not like OU, LSU or Florida either but they all have seemed to look better so far. LSU and Florida look the best to me; Florida POUNDED Tennessee, that was amazing. OU pounded Miami, LSU pounded everyone and USC really hasn't looked as strong as the other 3 so far. But there is still a lot of football to play and I sure can't wait to see how it all turns out!!

Oh yeah................... GO SEC!!!!

granted I don't really follow College ball, but just because you did well in the polls, doesn't make you a champion.

and doesn't it always seem like USC gets picked to do well, even though they play on the week side of the US? What good teams do they play?

IMO, USC is the new Notre Dame... no matter how bad they do, the press loves them and will rank them absurdly high in the polls

+1

I'd like to see USC have a schedule where they play some of the tougher teams out there such as LSU, Auburn, OU, Florida, Tennessee, Ohio State, etc.

I don't think they'd be doing as well as they do with their weak schedule if they had to play teams like these every week like other teams do.

i couldnt have said it better. USC seems over rated to me, they've played ****, and havent looked great doing so, no way should they be #1. LSU has played an allright schedule, should be #1. UF has played a harder schedule than USC (though not a hard one at all) and should be #2.... yeah, the rest doesnt matter, should be LSU, UF, USC in my book. and i personally think LSU/UF isnt a done deal yet, and will be a HUGE game....

that's the thing i hate most. if you're liked by ESPN you get a high preseason (which helps the rest of the season).... take michigan for instance... first round, they were ranked 5th.... ABOVE ****ING FLORIDA!?!?!?!?!?! soooo did anyone notice, michigan sucks, lost to a 1 aa, followed by another **** team, and their only win is against the worst team in the nation, notre dame..... how were they above florida to begin with? yeah, i call bs.... i cant wait till this is all said and done, it makes me angry!
