I'm going to put new gears in my 89 GT, and am considering getting a used FRPP set w/ low miles on them. Any one have any trouble in the past w/ used gears? Anything I should consider before buying some? Or is it just better to buy new? What's a fair price (used w/ <1000 miles)?

I have done a couple of used FRPP gear installs. As long as you take your time and observe proper setup you shouldn't have any problems. I have installed 2 sets of 3.55's and 1 set of 3.73's that were used factory gears.

my gears were used and they work fantastic. I don't see a problem with it. Just make sure you inspect them really well and becareful with the install. infact, if you don't have the correct tools I would take it to a professional.

Just check them out before you do it. My experience is that used gears whine a lot if not installed properly.

Thanks for the tip. I do actually plan on having them done professionally. I've already checked w/ the shop that I want to do it, to make sure that they are willing to install used parts.

No problem man. I had the same debate when I installed mine. I installed them myself too so being used and my first time installing them the odds weren't good that they would be perfect. No problems though. I even took it to a shop a few months later to get it checked out and they said th ebacklash and everything was fine. good wear pattern as well. they changed out a bearing that was bad though. Make sure you get all new bearings too. If you have questions about your trac loc get that rebuilt too while you are down there. I didn't do mine because I didn't get the parts in time. GOod luck

I am running a set of used FRPP 3.73's, not a peep. As long as they are set-up correctly and you got a matching pinion and ring set you should not have any problems. With the abundance of used sets I would say half price of a new set is fair. Mine were free, though
