Using Old Tires

I have a set of BFG KDW 255-45-17. They are about 4 years old. They have been sitting in a storage unit off the wheels. Is there any harm in using these. Do they deteriorate? They have about 12,000m on them. Thanks.

what is the DOT number on them?

The rubber does deteriorate over time. Im not sure of the rate but I think it only affects the grip and not the integrety. Put them on and burn them up Its only probably 60 bucks to get them mounted and ballanced. If you dont like them tthey will last until you can get some new ones.

i tow my boat trailor that has tires from 1983 and they seem to be ok ... i think you will be alright, people run thier snow tires for 5+ years and have no problems..

I would check for dry rot before putting them on. Old tires can lose their integrity as the tread may separate from the rest of the tire...

I don't worry about that stuff. I have tires on my cars from 2002. My friends has a set of Goodyear Eagle GSC's from 1999. No worries, no problems.

it would take like 5 years with force applied on top of it with out that tire moving the whole time for you to begin considering that tire being a danger.

at work after a tire is more than 4 years old we are required to destroy it .........

Rubber deteriorates as soon at it's made. They could be sitting in a dark warehouse not mounted on rims and they will break down. It has to do with the oxygen in the air eating the rubber. Filling your tires with nitrogen can help stop, but as a rule, if your tires are 6 years old or older, you should junk them.

I have a set of tires i bought fresh at 5 years old. I thought to myself they would be fine since they were new right? Well by 6 years old they were dry rotted and dangerous and i had to ditch them.

Check the DOT date code on the tire. Ignore when you bought them, because sometimes the tires sit in a warehouse for years before being sold. Tirerack's closeout deals are usually old tires sitting around for 1-2 years.

I'll most likely buy new ones. I have to replace the fronts regardless. I currently have Nitto DR's on the rear. They are about 14 months old with about 1500-2000m. The two KDW's in the storage unit served their purpose.

Cracks/dry rot in the tread is present. Tires are getting trashed

No smokin for me. My Stang shifted it's status. It's being used for joy rides/ some shows/ go get ice cream. It's also for sale. Time to move on.

Yeah thanks. I totally agree. My life is worth 4 tires. I ended up ordering (4) 245-45-17's
The 255-45-17's are $32 more each. Not that much wider.

Everything worked out great. Got my tires. One of the service techs bought my Nitto DR's. New KDW's are dated July 08 Thanks for everyones help.
