Okay, I just bought a 2000 V6 5-speed with 146,000 miles from a guy about 4 months ago. Only mods he put were a BBK cia and sport speed shift. I'm still fairly new to the world of Mustangs but over the past 4 months I've learned a lot.
So there are two problems I am having as of now.
1) I just replaced the clutch about a month ago. New disc, pressure plate, release and pilot bearing and I even replaced rear main seal. For about two weeks following the replacement, it ran great. Smooth shifts in between gears. Easy take off from a stop, no noises, whole nine yards; all is fine. Then I took a 3 hour trip into the mountains with it and during the last stretch of the trip, in first gear, from a stop, it acted like the engine had lost power and the tranny would shake violently as I engaged the clutch. Felt extremely similar to what it feels like when an engine stalls out from letting off the clutch too quick. Had this only happened once, I'd have never second guessed it but ever since then, anytime I am on any incline, or the engine is under a heavier than normal load it does that on take-off...I have been driving manual trannys ever since I learned how to drive so I think my driving ability is out of question. Someone told me that since the clutch system is self-adjusting I have to replace the cable whenever I replace the clutch..could that be my problem?
2) About a week before I replaced the clutch, I cranked my car up one morning and immediately I heard a loud ticking noise coming from what sounded like the valvetrain. It was an aggressive noise and shook the motor and tranny almost as if I had a broken motor mount. As the idle lowered, the ticking would quiet and the engine would quit shaking. But it didn't quiet down much, still loud. Whenever I drove it on the road and got up to 55 mph or so, after about a mile it completely quit. I talked to my mechanic and he recommended doing an oil change and adding Lucas oil stabilizer...so I did and the problem went away. But this morning it came back after having been gone for about a month or 1300 miles or so. I've heard it could be a bad lifter(s) and changing the oil more often will only give me time before I have to do some major work. But then I have also heard it could be the oil pump.
Any insight would help.
