V6 to 4.6 L Info?? Ideas?? L@@K!!

Hey guys, what I'm planning to do is buy a 99+ V6 Mustang and swap in a supercharged 4.6L 32v V8 engine. The only reason why I want to start with a 6 cylinder is because I'd rather not pay the extra money for a V8 car that I'm only gonna yank the motor out of anyway. If anyone knows of any links to websites with info on swapping a 4.6L into a 6 cylinder car, I would greatly appreciate it if you would post them so that I can get a little more info on this procedure. Also if anyone knows anything about it themselves and could list off what would need to be swapped and modified, I would appreciate that as well. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Its going to cost you more to swap a 32V than buying a V8 to begin with.

he knows that he said that the reason he was doing it was becuase of insruance. Which is a really good idea. But then again you better hope you do not wreck. Also you will need to upgrade everything else.

He's doing it because of insurance?? If he seriously has to do this because he cant afford the insurance of a V8 than he's not going to be able to complete the swap.

Trust me, the reason that I'm doing it has nothing to do with insurance or saving money in the long run or anything like that. I have plenty of money to do the swap, buy a V8 mustang, or anything else of that nature. The main reason why I want to do this swap is because I need a winter project so I don't die of boredom, and I'd rather just pick up a cheap sixxer than start off fifteen grand deep for a 16v V8 car that I'm just gonna toss the motor out of anyway. If you guys have any info or know of where there is some online, I would appreciate it. thanks.

trust me, you are going to spend more money than you think, been there done that....it is not just the engine and tranny that need swapped....you also have to do the exhaust, since it bolts on differently, master cylinder, radiator, fan, computers, and a bunch of others...

plus you should change the clutch, rear axle, and other misc stuff...

it is more expensive to do the swap than to buy a cobra and pay the insurance..

Its also cheaper to buy a 99-00 GT or SN95 GT and swap out in 32V. But, if you just AVE to do it, you'll need atleast:

-motor
-front accessories
-V8 ECU and harness
-radiator fan
-AC relocation kit
-V8 fuel rails (if not on motor already)
-tranny bell housing
-mounts

Thats just a few of what you'll need. You'll also be hardpressed to find anyone who will be willing to rewire the car. That in itself is a MAJOR PITA! You're looking at about $5+K in parts and a few thousand in labor alone. Certainly not cheap.

i think it can be done if you have friends...

many people told me it wasn't worth swapping my automatic tranny out for a 5 speed...
everyone said been there done that...
everyone said better sell yours and buy a 5speed...

well i ignored everyone and went ahead and did it. it cost me 1000 bucks with everything! i had friends and i got killer deals on everything and in the end I saved about 3000 by going this way rather than getting a new car...

do i regret it? HELL NO...

am i thinking of doing something similar very soon? YES! maybe a 32v... we'll see

I hear you on doing it just for the hell of it but why don't you just start out with a body in white ( or whatever they are called nowadays )?

Ummmm no offence, but that’s kind of a retarded comparison. Swapping from an auto to a stick is considerably less difficult and costly than going for a 3.8 base to a DOHC 4.6!

As stated in the above post, it’s not just a matter of an engine and tranny swap….

DOHC Engine
T/B linkage
Engine accessories and brackets
Radiator
Fan
Computer/wiring harness
AC relocation kit
Transmission
Engine mounts
Exhaust
Complete rear end (that 7.5 won’t last)
Suspension (springs, struts)
Etc, etc

……now, do the math. He’d be waaaaaay furthur ahead to buy a 32V car to start with, or at least start the swap with a GT. Besides, the GT engine/transmission will fetch a far better price than some limp wristed 3.8L when he decides to sell it to make some of his money back!

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not sure if I'll just take the advice and start with a GT or not, but either way, I'm definitely looking forward to getting my hands dirty on this project. I'll be sad to see my last project go (383ci stroker Firebird with a 700R4 tranny and Moser 12 bolt rear end), but hopefully this next project idea of mine will be just as fun. thanks again, and if anyone has anymore ideas, feel free to share them.

none taken... i wasn't comparing the level of difficulty the swap took...

i was just comparing the attitude that i got when i was starting my project. same answers that he's getting for an even easier project.

i was just saying... swallow really hard and jump right in... you'll swear... you'll punch and kick, but when it's done you'll know your car better than most people on this site know theirs...

it isn't just swallowing and swearing...but also working overtime to afford it...much more expensive than just a tranny swap...

I hear you guys as far as the cost goes. The problem is that I have plenty of money to do it right now. I know that doesn't sound like much of a problem does it? Well, what I mean is when I have the money to do something, I'll usually just go ahead and do it regardless of the cost and then something else will come along and I'll kick myself for having spent the money elsewhere. I'm gonna have to think this one through before I commit that kinda cash to it.

I dont blame you for doing it. sounds fun. I would think your best starting point would be to buy the 03 cobra motor from Ford Motorsport. It is a chunk of change at $13000 but it comes supercharger to oil pan with harness and computer. Direct bolt in. Think about the brakes and suspension too though. Just a motor swap in a six cylinder car will most likely kill you cause it wont be able to stop or turn. have fun.

i have an interesting idea for you if youre thinking of building something...

get a fox body 5.0 car.. swap in the 4.6 cobra motor...

that way you have the v8 car to begin with(stronger rearend breaks, suspention and stuff), you still get to do something very creative and fun... and it would simply haul ass, foxes are considerably smaller and lighter than the newer GT's...

a guy around here has a coupe with a DOHC and a nitrous kit.. damn cool car if you ask me... if i ever get rid of the 96, i was thinking of putting a 2v in something older
