If by "oil thing" you mean oil baffle on the passenger side valve cover, you don't have to grind it off. You can unbolt it, and you should be fine. Just watch out if you take the oil cap off while the car is running, oil might splash out.

Are you running stock valve covers?

I had 1.7RR (Crane/Ford) and they cleared with a little trimming of the oil baffle (not total removal)...

You might want to look into getting cork valve cover gaskets for more clearance...

Or double them up is you have to. Is it hitting on the lip of the baffle? That is wierd though, I run 1.7's with stock valve covers and I don't have any clearance issue at all.

I did grind the baffle down on my FMS covers..then added an inline clear fuel filter in the valve cover to throttle body vac line to knock out any oil due to the lack of having an oil baffle.

Derek,

Does that in-line filter ever pick up any oil? I might do that with mine. Thanks!

Well I only have 200 miles on the motor since being built..the filter is still clean as can be, but I expect it to play it's part once I begin to enjoy the upper RPMs a little more often. It does look fairly cool in place and was the only way I could think of to keep the oil out. I will "giver er" a bit of a workout this weekend, and I'll let you know if any deposits make there way in there.
Really glad to hear you figured out the start issue..good job.
