Valve spring removal

Hey guys,

Do you all think it would be possible to remove valve springs without a spring compressor? these springs im removing only have a 50 lb force at installed height.

Also, when the sprin is compressed is the lock free to fall out?

I'm no expert, but I think you stand a supstancial chance of bending your valve if you slip? But I think if not having the tool is a problem I think you can borrow one from AutoZone. I know AutoZone is the ricer hang out but they'll hook you up.

You can get one faily cheap at Autozone, checkers(yuck) or Napa. There are several kinds and price ranges. I found the "L" shaped one works fine and cheap. Also the large "C" shaped one is great buy pricey. The crappy $6 from checkers works but is a pain.

You will need one to do it otherwise you could damage something and it would be a huge PITA. Also autozone rents the tool for free you just put a refundable deposit on it.

I'll assume you want to keep all the parts in good shape, so I'll agree with renting or buying a compressor. Believe me, even 25lb lawnmower springs are hard to remove by hand.

If you dont care and just want them off, a piece of 3/4" pipe and a BFH works. put an open pipe end over the stem and keepers and hit it with the hammer. The keepers will fall out or fly somewhere. Wear eye protection.

Or a deep socket. I've never hurt anything using a hammer and socket.

just rent the tool, or hell, buy one they are cheap, can get one from Autozone for under 10 bucks

Ah, those were the days. Don't forget to put a towel under the valves.

Oh you want to put them back on the head as well? Better get the tool.

Don,t forget to put some rope through the spark plug hole and turn that cylinder up to prevent the valves from dropping into the bottom of the bore, or else its "Off with the head!"

Yeah I just bought the tool, it was only $10.

Except its not going to work as easily as it was designed as this is for workin on the beat of a 22r I was talkin about in a earlier thread

I hope porting and polishing is as easy as the instructsion came with the kit says it is.
