thinking of doing stripes on the car ,painting is to much money but the vinal is reasonable , my ? is how long do they last and will it mess the paint up under the stripes , and when your waxing the car if you hit the stripes with wax wont it leave marks on the border where the paint and stripes come togetther . thanks

Couple things with vinyl, if your in a sunny environment, the paint under the stripes won't fade like the rest of the car does across time. Paint these days holds up well, but still changes over time in prolonged sunlight. A person who knows their car well will notice even the slightest difference.

My suggestion is if you want stripes and you go either route, don't go into it thinking you may pull them off in time. The vinyl product used these days last 5 to 10 years and longer in less harsh environments. Be decisive.

Waxing may seem like a pain but if you do a good job of clean up, you won't have residue around the edges of the stripes.

Another option would be to clear in the vinyl stripes, it's cheaper than painting, and you get a smoother transition than just an applied vinyl product because they are under clearcoat. The end result is pretty nice.

I also have had no problem with vinyl. I have also removed them with no problem.

I had stripes , took them off last weekend. Previous owner of the car let it sit under a tree and the sap destroyed the vinyl. It took me 5 hours of pulling, scraping, goo-gone, rinsing and re-waxing. Luckily the paint still looks brand new. Before/after pics attached.

Some people like the spoiler and some don't. I feel it supplements the Stang well . There are more pics at www.cardomain.com/ride/2382372

Coming from a sign maker. No the vinyl will not mess the paint up at all. Like mentioned above you do stand a chance of paint fading at a different rate than that under the vinyl but todays paints are so awesome that it may not be a factor . As long as you get some good premium cast vinyl ( 9yrs ) it should outlast your ownership of the car (that assumption is based on how often people change cars). As far as the wax goes, don't be a "globber" and stay away from the edges of the vinyl as well as the edges and creases in the body lines of the car.

Count me among those who hate that spoiler. It, in my opinion, ruins a great looking car.

Stripes and headaches

I too had gold metalic stripes on my car. Love the look, but it started to fade after only one summer. I had to get the hood and top redone. I was told that the choice of having heavy metalic stripes was the cause.

As for the spoiler, no offence but I must agree that their killing the look of the car.

Unless it was years ago, it wasn't because it was a metallic film (or maybe it was old film). Technology and manufacturing of these films have advanced tremendously. True metallics do not have the outdoor life as non metallics, but as I stated before as long as it is cast film it will last with a few exceptions. The outdoor life on cast 3M metallics or ultra metallics are 5-7 yrs - non-metallics are up to 9 yrs. However, cast holographics, diamond plate and a few other "specialty" films usually last 1 yr outdoors, tops.

I can't stress it enough that when people get vinyl make sure you are getting a good name brand and if its gonna be outdoors or on a vehicle use cast vinyl. Now with window stickers and windshield banners you can skimp and just get a premium 5-7 yr calendered vinyl and be fine.
