Have you performed any mods yet? You need ~300rwhp to run mid-12's in a full weight GT so if you want the engine to stay NA, you'll need full external bolt-on mods plus heads/cam/intake but it doesn't stop there. You'll also need gears, stickier tires, rear upper/lower control arms, weight reduction, and practice launching/shifting gears to get there.
I wouldn't say the 185s are too big, but you would have to rev it up quite a bit to get them to their full potential. I would recommend a set of Trick Flow Twisted Wedge 170s for a street car. You don't have to notch the pistons to run a 2.02" intake valve and a very decent cam with those.

yeah i was thinking on getting some 185cc trickflows with an edelbrock performer rpm ll and a comp xe282 cam and all the other mods. does that sound like a good combo? also a friend told me to get a victor jr instead.
i was thinking on getting a custom cam theres a shop nearby but i dont know if they do custom cams for ford, you all think the trickflows 170s would be better for the 302.
If your gonna use a custom cam call the person you are getting it from and ask what they recomend.
BTW Trickflow makes another head the 190cc Fast as Cast which is a cast version of the 185cnc'ed heads.
For a good custom cam look up camshaft innovations and flowtech induction.
I know camshaft innovations will sell you any of those trickflow heads with valvesprings setup for the cam they will grind you.
I think flowtech induction will do the same with afr heads.
