I just bought my 1st 88 Notch as a "project car" with some friends. I have never owned a 5.0, and am interested in learning from all you guys. The car was having some charging problems, so we upgraded to a 3g alternator. The charging system seems to be up to par now.
We bought the car to play around with at the track. So my buddy drove it to the track ~25 miles. This was probably the longest drive we have made with the car since purchasing. It sat for 30-45 minutes with the hood up, fans blowing on the motor, in ~102 degree humid weather.
When he went to make a pass he started the car, and about 10-15 seconds later it stalled. Immediately trying to restart with no luck. Let the car sit for a couple minutes, and again stalls after 10-15 seconds. No luck restarting after the initial stall. It cranks, but does not fire. Jumper-ed the coil, and we did have spark. At this time I didn't have a fuel pressure gauge to check the pressure out.
So we borrowed a trailer, and took the car home. Funny thing is when we get it home, the car starts, idles, and drives perfectly. I checked some stuff out on the car today with it running correctly. Fuel pressure is 40 psi (no vacuum on regulator). Vacuum is 19-21 at idle. Plugs look new/good with a .042 gap. ECT & ACT sensors have accurate resistance/voltage. I plan on taking the car on a trip, with plans on trying to get it to do what it did at the track. What are some of the things I need to check on the car.
88 LX 5.0
Stock motor...still has speed density, egr, catalytic converters, ac, etc......
5 speed
Rear end has been upgraded with 4.10 gears, spool, and strange axles.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
