Watkins Glen & the Canadian National Anthem

Just wondering why they played the Canadian National Anthem at the start of the Nextel Cup race held there last weekend? I assuming it was due to Ron Fellows & Patrick Carpentier both being enterred in the race. So why wasn't the Columbian National Anthem played for Juan Pablo Montoya? Or is he an American citizen now?

I would imagine that it would be a common courtesy, as many of the people in the stands are Canadian - Watkin's Glen in closer to major Canadian metropolitan centers [Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto] than those in the U.S. The town usually has more Canucks in it than Yanks, as it is a major tourist draw.

Both anthems are played at all hockey games as a common courtesy as well, even though a town like Edmonton doesn't have many tourists in February when its -40* for a month..

Not in Detroit... We only play the Canadian anthem when we play a team from Canada at the Joe, I still remeber when Karen Newman forgot the words during a game against the Leafs. However, at Michigan International Speedway they do sing "Oh Canada" as well as "The Star Spangled Banner" before each race.

i live about an hour from the glen and it seams as though we play the canadian anthem at just about every profesional sport in the area if it can some how relate back to canada. im sure its out of respect since alot of people come down from canada to watch the races
