As hard as it is to believe there has been a Cyclone warning announced for the Altoona and immediate surrounding areas.

Our weather correspondant Maria Conchita Alvarez has spotted a Cyclone Swallowing up a Yellow 1995 Mustang Gt Convertible. Yes, that is correct Killercanary has been swallowed up by a Cyclone. I'll let the man himself explain the rest.

So Please be careful, one stang has been lost. Let's stop the madness there.

Yes its true. Thanks for pouring salt in my wounds Charlie. Last saturday I lined up next to a black GMC cylcone. For those that don't know what these are, here's some info taken from http://www.syty.org.

Both the Syclone and Typhoon utilize a 4.3L Turbocharged Vortec V6, pushing out 285+ HP (disputed to be 330) with 360ft/lbs of torque, with a liquid-cooled intercooler. A multiport fuel system feeds the motor while a TH700R4 automatic transmission puts power down to the AWD drivetrain. 0-60 times range from under 5 seconds (even in the rain!) to a quarter mile time of low/high 13's for the Syclone and mid 13's to low 14's for the Typhoon in stock form. The Syclone's ONLY production year was in 1991 with an estimated 2995 units built, while the Typhoon lasted from 1992-93 with 2500 units built in 92 and 2200 units built in 93. Both trucks feature a specialized ground effects package (known as cladding) and turbine style 16x8 aluminum rims. The Syclone's interior features plush cloth bucket seats with the "Syclone" badge embroidered into the headrest, along with door inserts to match while the 92 Typhoon's feature leather/cloth seats with headrest "Typhoon"embroidery and the 93 features full leather interior with power seats and overhead console. The trucks feature center console holds the leather shifter while a gauge cluster from a Sunbird GT keeps you informed of engine vitals and boost.

Anyway, Troy (yeahloh95) was in the car with me and knew of the truck. He said it had stuff done to it, but he wasn't sure what. When we were lined up next to each othe he started "brake spooling" the turbo and I knew that with his AWD I needed a good launch to hang with him out of the hole... well nerves got the best of me and I launched too hard and sent the 315's spinning and searching for any traction they could find. He quickly jumped me by 1.5 car lengths, I thought I would start to chase him down especially as I hit 4th where my car shines... that wasn't the case. he didn't pull anymore on me than what he got me off the line, but I couldn't close the gap either. I have a bunch of excuses, but regardless, he beat me. It was an AWESOME looking truck with chrome Z06 wheels and what appeared to be ~345 series rubber out back. I will be looking for a rematch with this guy hopefully at the track when the playing field will be a little more level, ie I'll too have traction. All in all, from what I read on syty.org I think I fared better than expected seeing how many free mods there are for them and how quick they were stock. I always knew they were quick as I've seen 12 second typhoons at my track, but I have a new found respect for them. Its hard to hang with a car that can hit 60mph in under 5 seconds on the street!

Well, I know this is a bit old, but I was at a car show this weekend and guess who I ran into... yep, the cyclone owner. He turned out to be pretty cool and we laughed about it. Troy asked him what it ran and I believe he said it had gone 12.8 in the 1/4. Anyway, here's a pic of the truck. We cruised around after the show and it was amazing to see him brake spool the turbos and launch under boost on the street... it will take a LOT to hang with this truck on the street... the launch is killer!

Syclone, man, Syclone! =)

These trucks were built for stoplight to stoplight races. They're not bad at the strip, but they're just mean on the street.

The 11" ZR1 wheels fit perfectly on the back without a spacer. Most people run 315s with them. People have realized that the wider tire doesn't cancel out the shorter sidewall though. They can actually get better 60' times with the stock 16" wheels and 245/50 tires. But the ZR1s look nice, and the steamroller look from behind is pretty cool too. =)

Adam, who owns the truck, sent me an email with the emphasis on Syclone. I didn't even notice it until I looked at the pics and saw it spelled with an S. Whoops!


Bill, the first thing I noticed was the 315's out back. Ironically, that's what I have too.... but they did nothing for me when I lined up against Adam. At the track however, I have pulled a 1.66 60' on them!!! I know that on the street I have little to no chance to beat his truck, my only hope would be at the track where I can finally get some traction. Its a killer stop light racer, that's for sure!!!

All in all, from what I read on syty.org I think I fared better than expected seeing how many free mods there are for them and how quick they were stock. Just wanted to mention something about that... These trucks are really picky. One guy got his truck down to 12.26 with basically just a chip, AFPR, and alky injection. Completely stock engine, turbo, and trans. With just a turbo/downpipe upgrade, he went 11.79. At the same time, I've seen people spend thousands on go-fast parts, and they end up with a 14 second truck. It's really the stuff you can't see that determines how fast these things are. Tuning, tuning, tuning.

One odd thing is that our 60' times really aren't that impressive. The average on syty.net is probably around 1.7x. Definitely not bad, but not that impressive compared to what a launch looks and feels like. There are a decent number of 1.6's and even some 1.5's, but even that's not super low.

For 0-60, they were rated at 4.6 seconds. We just recently found out from some of the people that worked on the SyTy project that they were pretty much always underrated. The numbers were too close (or even better than) the Vette, and GM wouldn't let its flagship get beaten by some stupid truck. It's very likely that a stock truck was even lower than that. Even Sy's with just a few tweaks are getting under 4 seconds. The AWD means we can do that just about anywhere too. It takes quite a bit to beat one to 60 from a stoplight.

I've been reading up on these things, never heard of them before... they are sick!

Its like the guys from Buick who designed Grand Nationals were all bummed out cause they cancelled production in 87, just hangin around the shop, then decided to make one into a AWD truck and sold the idea to GMC...

Needless to say I want one!

My buddy had a Typhoon and it was sick also. It was a real harsh ride and sold it only after 4 months of ownership.
