I'm starting to get annoyed by it. When i go past cars or walls or something the noise is louder but i can hear it all the time. of course not when idling. the noise is hard to explain but someone said to me it might be my wheel bearing?>
..pretty vague discription..could be wheel bearing and if so very easy fix. Simply pull the bearing and replace with a feash one, hardest part is cleaning the hands after repacking it with grease.
Well I can't hear it, but it is most likely your bearings... I got bearings and seals for about $60 from Advanced Auto Parts, but I haven't installed them yet. Buy cotter pins and grease while you are there. I can't imagine the noise being something else, unless your brakes are really messed up.
If you want, pry the grease cap out and just take a look and see how much grease is in there. If there isnt much on the bearings, then you know that you have a problem there. Pull your wheel in and out to determine if there is play. You can also spin the wheel and if you hear something, then you know its the bearings.
I have never replaced the bearings in the rear... they are MUCH harder than the front. Do do the front, you take the wheel off, take the grease cap off, take the cotter pin out, take the castlenut off, take the brake calipers off using a T45 wrench (I think it is T45), just pull the caliper off and hang it somewhere so that it is not hanging by the rubber hose. Then you just start removing the bearings and rotor and stuff. You should pick up a Haynes manual, it will really help. I'm sorry I cant help you with the rears. Good luck.
When rear wheel bearings start to go, they normally go from making noise to catching really bad in short order - when I lost one (on a 4 banger mind you), it felt like the rear of the car was going to tear off the frame. On every revolution (so it felt), the wheel would catch and lock up, which caused the suspension to bind.
A less severe symptom is a nasty howling or rumbing from the rear of the car.
I would be lookin at the brakes more. If the noise is in the rear - rear brakes tend to drag (drums or disks). If you lightly (and carefully, on a closed road, etc etc ) apply the e-brake, does the noise change or go away?
i got your message, and if you do the simple conversion you'll be replacing the bearings all the way around as well as the axle shafts...should take care of it
I had my mechanic replace the front wheel bearings and the noise is still there . I'm almost positive its in the passenger rear wheel. any ideas? as i slow down the noise slows down as well.
