Hey all. I have a weird noise coming from either my dash or engine. It only happens when I get on the gas. The only way to describe it is like grains of sand lightly hitting something in the engine bay. No it isnt sand. From what I was told pinging is a more noticable marble clunking sound but not sure if thats true. Any ideas?

It sounds like something vibrating, a heat shield maybe? I had a wierd noise on another car, and it turned out to be this.

I have a similar sound coming from the rear end. Noticed it after my last trip down the strip the other night. I'm sure it's different though.

I seriously doubt it is knocking or pinging since these engines have a knock sensor which communicates with the ECU and when detonation issues are encountered the ignition timing is retarded, reducing the knocking and protecting the engine. Any driveability issues when you hear this sound?

Next I would think it may be intake or valve lash sounds you are hearing. But the "sand" comment throws me a bit. Vacuum leaks can cause a crackling sucking sound which could become less obvious inside the car. Valve lash clearance issues will sound wet and more metallic.

If it is inside the car, it could be something with the instrument cluster. Next time you get on it - peek at the tach and see if the needle is dropping as expected or sticking. Same with the MPH gauge.

Sorry I can't be of more help without hearing what you are hearing.

thanks for your replies. I think it may be the gauge cluster, not sure if its causing any damage because everything is working well. I forgot to mention my mods though I don't think they have anything do do with it.

Happy to help. I had a similar sound in the gauge cluster of my V-6. Came from the tachometer. It was annoying yet harmless. Tach needle was stickie past 4,300 RPM bounc back from WOT made it sound like BBs tinging in the cluster.

I have a similar, if not the same, sound. It is the center dash rattling. The molding is very loose and it's not even screwed in. Most of the interior molding is held together by thumb screws. And you thought imports had it bad.

Next time you hear the sound, put your hand on top of the center dash and push down and see if the noise disappears.

Did you switch out your shifter to a shorty? My car has a slight vibrating on metal noise only at certain times. When I put my hand on the shift knob tightly it stops. Once we start messing around with aftermarket parts the noises start. Get an exhaust to forget about that problem right away!!!!

Old thread, I know...

I searched and am bumping this because I have noticed the same exact thing, tonight. Sounds like it is coming from either the top of the engine or from the dash. 07alloytoy, did you find out what the problem is? It only seems to happen above around 4k rpms. Seems like the dash from what I'm hearing.

God Bless,

HHmmmmm now that you added your mod list, I'm leaning towards pinging!!! Easy test.....install the 87 octane tune while still having the 93 fuel and see if sound goes away.

Don't think it's pinging. I have a Shelby GT and I have the same issue. I highly doubt I'd be pinging with no work done to it at all. I run 93 only. Think it may just be the heat shield. No affect in performance at all.

God Bless,
