Engine What’s your preferred way to clean engine parts prior to assembly?

Hi all, I came into possession of a low mileage short block a few months ago. At the time, I thought I was going to stroke it but wound up deciding not to. Problem is, I already disassembled it. The parts are in a box in my garage. I’m going to put it back together as is and transfer my heads etc over to it. What do you like to use for products andprocesses to clean these parts before assembling to ensure no foreign material winds up in my engine?

Not related to cleaning individual parts but are you gonna take the block to be machined or anything? They may clean up the block during that process.

Yea I was going to have some machine work done but decided not to until I buy an aftermarket block. So basically gonna slap this one back together.

Gunk engine cleaner followed by soap and hot water.

I used purple powere super degreaser, or something like that, and a pressure washer. I hand dry parts as much as I can and stick them next to a dehumidifier in basement. Works good for me. Maybe it will work for you. Good luck.

Brake clean. Nylon or brass brushes. Then clean oil or assembly lube for the internal parts right before assembly. Less about the actual product and more about the assembly environment.

A clean assembly area is key. The parts can be super clean but if the engine is sitting in a dusty garage shared with other uses, stuff gets kicked up. Especially if this turns into a multi day/ multi week assembly.

I'd suggest getting some brown paper painting drop sheets to keep all your cleaned parts, cleaned tools and new gaskets on. I get them at the local hardware. They're $5 for a 10x20 sheet.

Set up a little clean area. Then clean and assemble all at once. Get an engine bag or cover or a large clean trash bag for any time you aren't working on it.

Hopefully you marked the location for everything before you boxed it up.

Whats the condition of the block right now.. Do you want to leave the exterior and concentrate on cleaning the internals only for assembly?

outside of block is pretty clean. Just like you said, want to concentrate on internals for assembly purposes

After a gunk soak I hit it with parts cleaning brush. Then rinse with garden hose and dry with compressed air.

Hot soap and water, clean out oil galleries with a rifle cleaniing rod/brush, dry with compressed air and coat ALL metal surfaces with WD40.. The WD 40 won't last a long time, so get on it or recoat it again later.....
Engine assembly lube on all bearings.. LUBE on flat tappet cam lobes, oil on roller cam., and lots of oil when installing pistons and lifters..

I used Boeshield T9 to coat everything last time I had an engine open. It stayed open for 3 full months this spring with no difference in surface degradation.

I've been using it to coat the cast iron on all my woodworking equipment for the last year with excellent results.

It lasts a long time. WD40 doesn't last 2 days.

Although the machine shop clean my block, I still did some cleaning myself and fortunately I did because they were not as thorough as I was. I used those block cleaning brushes and ran them in every passage and I use those thread chasers to cleanup all the threads and be sure to wipe the block with some oil after cleaning because surface rust starts fast.
