What all is needed for gear install

I ordered my pro 5.0 gears from partshopper today and im still debating wether or not to install them myself.

If i did install them myself what would i need to buy for the installation? Also is there a guide somewhere for me to install them?

I called a shop that installs gears and they said i would need a ring spacer, is that true? How long should the install take?

Not to hijack the thread or anything but I have recently been looking into getting a geart intstalled. But my buddie dave(GoBabyVroommm) says that the gear, and pinion, crush sleeve and nut. Arn't enough for the install. You need to buy all new bearings? Is this true?

You'll only need new bearings if yours are bad. Check them first if you can, and if they look bad order some new ones. All of mine looked fine so I just reused them.

If you have or can borrow the tools Rude, then I'd say do it yourself. Its not hard at all, but you need the right kind of tools to measure the backlash, and for matching shims. The hardest part was trying to get the clip back in the middle of the differential, and getting the correct shims for the proper backlash.

I would suggest not doing them yourself with the Pro 5.0 gears you ordered. I did this with Ford gears and was able to reuse the stock shims with no problems. IT was not terribly difficult with the FRPP gears, but I have it becomes more difficult with using other brand gears. Just to add as well, there is nothing wrong with the gears you ordered, but it may take a bit more adjustment to get it right and not make noise and for them to last a while.

I would get a new pinion bearing, and pinion seal. Those are very easy to replace and are usually one of the first things to crap out on a stock 8.8 rear. Those can be had together for like 20 bucks. You NEED a bottle of friction modifier for the posi, and a few quarts of gear oil. I would definitely pay someone to do the gears, that way if they screw up, they can eat it. You do not need a ring spacer for an 8.8 rear. Most people who do it set up the wrong pattern, which leads to a gear whine at speed, or with too much backlash, which can eventually lead to busted teeth off the ring gear. Pay someone who has the right tools and the knowledge. This is nothing to take on by yourself.

Agreed with Joe, I consider myself competent enough, but I don;t want to find out I was wrong at 100...

Local ford guy here charged me $150 for the install, and they are going in tomorrow. I had to buy gears(came with pinion nut and crush collar), seal, pinion bearings, 3 quarts of diff fluid, additive. The gears were $125, and $40 for the other parts direct from ford.

i think i'm going with the deluxe install ford kit when i do mine. i figure why not change everthing you can while your at it. this kit is about $100. there are three diff. kits offered by ford. the tloc rebuild kit if like $50 also and i think that would be worthwhile too.
