What are the shortcomings of a stock intake.

An unported "select" stock intake supports ~230-240HP if you get a good engine combo together. Port the lower and I've seen the stock intake support ~260HP. Get crazy with cutting the upper up to port it, and you might get ~300HP out of it if your good. All these are naturally aspirated numbers and just my opinion.

All i know that is with the stock intake and mild porting, I couldn't muster up anything better than a 13.5 at the track with my afr's and afm cam. My new Holely intake will change all that, however.

That is quite the mismatch. KNow what your weight was? And what was your mph?

I don't think horsepower is the issue with the stock intake. The runners are longer and help to produce more torque and a wider powerband that ends earlier than a short runner intake. For a street car most people including myself absolutely underestimate what a stock intake will do. If you port the lower they work surprisingly well on mild cars. Even after porting the smaller ports help with intake charge velocity and really produce excellent low and midrange power. Tmoss should know, he's ported something like a million of those things and people still send them.

I know a few almost stock aod cars running high 12's on nitrous, i mean only dr's, mufflers and gears pretty impressive since they will go deep 12's with some more parts.

Sure, why not? If I had an 1986 SD car with flattop pistons, I would go with a nice set of ported Thumper E7s, a Tmoss lower and stock upper intake or if $$ allows, an aftermarket... like an Edelbrock Performer or similar [something idle - 6000] 65mm T body... all of which would probably come close to maxing out the stock 19 lb injectors... plus all the bolt on stuff .. headers.. exhaust..etc... then, a GOOD posi unit, some 3.73s or 4.10s [28" tire on the 4.10s IMO], 26x10" ET Drags. 255 L/hr fuel pump, and a good quality wet nitrous kit with a window switch. Little bit of suspension work to make it all stick off the line and you'll be in the 7s in the 1/8th mile..

Depending on the amount of nitrous used... it could have the potential to go upper 11s easily... maybe quicker if you're brave and run the 150 shot..

I had to run a 150 shot on my stock 86' motor to get a 7.90.
I had a gt-40,65mm T-body and full BBK exhaust w/Flowmasters.
I think it was because of the crap 86' heads and cam.
