does the hose from above the egr in the left picture go to where the hose is capped off in the 2nd? why would someone do that to the engine?

Because a long time ago someone started a myth that if you delete the egr coolant hoses you'll gain 10HP.

It's crap. I would hook them back up the way Henry Ford and Jesus intended

In your first pic, you can see the hose coming off the rear of the EGR spacer. Looks like someone cut it and put a bolt in there and clamped down on it.

There is a nippled on the front and rear of the EGR spacer. The front one connects to a nipple on the heater tube next to the ECT coolant temp sensor. The rear one connects to a nipple in a NPT port on the rear of the lower intake.

Without better pics of those two hoses tie-wrapped up, i can't be for sure that these are the hoses that belong there. For one, they are aftermarket hoses. So you should trace out where they run before hooking them up.

Mustang 5L5 is right.

The first hose is the EGR coolant hose.

The second hose is the A.I.R. connections to the back of the heads. Someone has hacked the fitting off of it.
