But it had timing chains longer than the Chunnel and probably wouldn't have been around for the end (even if NASCAR allowed). The tunnel port was the ultimate (outlawed) FE. Ford mistakenly thought the SOHC design could sustain 8K RPM on the long tracks.
Remember the less aero Talledega was only a couple of MPH down from the winged wonders with Hemis (D.Pearson did race laps at 199, B. Baker's lone "record" is around 202 if I remember correctly).
'60's Hemis are overrated - didn't make significantly more horses than the 50's tech FE (at sustained 7K RPM).
The Hemi is basically a no squish band, detonation prone, big two-valve motor with it's attendant characteristics. The FE was just fine to handle Chrysler's Hemi, but be glad Rat motors were outlawed by GM mgmt.
Everyone had "experimental" crap during the '60's (witness the MOldsmobile "Can-Am" 4 valve DOHC motors that never surfaced).
