This is only directed to those who had both a 5.0 and 4.6.

What motor would you take? Are they that big of a pain in the @ss to work on?
Do the motors have good after market suport yet , I know they didnt back when i owned my fox.
I owned a fox body 5.0 and i dont think i want to jump to a 4.6, But i defintly dont want another fox. So its making things hard on me finding that good 94-95 stang. And if i do buy a 4.6 i want 98-99 corect or is the PI head swap a pita? and is it worth it?

I currently own both. The 5.0 is easier (more simple) to work on (to me), but the 4.6 isn't that bad unless you get down into the timing chains and cams and all that crap. There are some things on a 4.6 that are easier though, such as water pump or thermostat replacement.

A decent mileage 4.6 is VERY reliable however, so also keep that in mind.

Oh, and I would try to get a 99-04, lowest miles you can find.

Oh man, you're going to get a mixed bag of opinions on this one.

Fox is out of the question...got it. One down!

So.....between the ’94-‘5 OHV, ’96-’98 SOHC or the ’99-’04 SOHC.....bolt on for bolt on and dollar for dollar, the '99-'04 is easily your best bang for the buck as a starting platform up to about the 300-320hp range. You've not only already got a 35-45hp jump over any of the '94-'98 cars in stock trim that you don't need to make up, but the '99-up PI heads and intake are the highest flowing of the bunch. This makes the engine as a whole more responsive to basic bolt-ons by comparison to the others.

At this point, you've pretty much exhaust the stock long block and you're going to have to start getting into aftermarket heads/intake and power adders to really start making power.

As for ease of working on them....I guess that all depends. I would rather do a head or cam swap on an OHV, but I'd rather do an intake, water pump or spark plug swap on an OHV.

My advice to you if body style isn’t a concern, would be to buy the newest, lowest mileage Mustang you can afford. Everything else being subjective, this fact will always be a consistent.

I dont have money for a 99+ thats pretty much out the ?
Im have a 5 hour drive in the morning to go look at a 95 5.0 but there is a local 96 with bought the same miles in my location.
but the 95 has a huge cowl hood with a bbk intake . I dont like that means it has been beatn on .
I know im not gunna find one that has been 1 or 20 times.

I have a 98gt with a 03 pi motor in it(best of all worlds, aero sytle, pi motor with obdII.)

That being said, I've owned 3 other stangs. a 93 lx.... hated that damn car... it had a curse. Ran 14.58 at 96 with every bolt on possible....

04 gt... Should of never sold it...... It LOVED 4.30 gears... Ran 13.70 on street tires with o/r exhaust and cold air....

92 gt... another nightmare. It had a built 351 (by me) in it. It was very easy to work on though. Could do a hg change on BOTH sides in about 4 hours. Hated the car though...... Just wasn't fun with the built aod (4r70 gear set swap, 3500 stall, nasty shift kit.... still not fun). It blew b/c of the patriot perf castings cracking (after I had them ported professionally).... Went 12.90 at 104 when the motor blew (first pass after porting... :roll)

That being said, I have loved my mods SOOOO much more than the pushrods. Mods can be a bit scary at first and are WAY more cramped in the engine bay but I still love how the rev and respond to bolt ons. I'm shooting for low 13's in a very stock 03 pi this weekend in my 98. gears, exhaust and a tb is all the car has too..... Good luck doing that in a fox or 94-95.....

Not trying to start anything, but I feel exactly the opposite. I have a 351w in my 68, a 351w TFS headed motor on the stand being built for my 90, a 302 in my 90 now, and a 4.6 04 GT. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my 4.6, but if I was only able to have one, it would hands down be a pushrod motor with a 5 speed.

To be fair though, you've got a pretty disposable income. If money were tight, the last thing I'd want is a 20-year-old money pit. I don't care how fast it is.

Disposable income!!! LMFAO!!!

Oh that's good man! You should go on tour, I would come see your show, you would make a good comedian!

If money were THAT tight, I would drive the car that's the most simple, and that parts are more available for.

Um....you own a '68, a '90 and an '04. You have three Mustangs and money to piss around on a new engine build. The original poster is barely able to scrape together $5,000 right now for just one car.

...I'd say comparing your financial situation to his...you're Donald friggin Trump!

LOL, you really don't know me do you? I do everything I can to have what I have, and I still barely afford it. I work my ass off.

Bottom line, if I want something, I will get it, it may take a while, and it may make it tight on me and the wife (she shares the same interests, so it makes it easier), but every last dime I have (and some I don't) goes to the cars. It's what I love.

Donald Trump, piss around, give me a ****ing break man! If he wants it enough he will earn it.

The people that say they can't do something, are really just the people that are too lazy to go out and earn it. It seems pretty simple to me.

He asked for peoples (who have owned both cars) opinions. He didn't ask for people to criticize other's opinions and life experiences.

Hey man, I call it how I see it.

It just seems funny that every thread that we both post in ends up like this. I get the impression that you think you're always right, and better than everyone else.

Again, I'm just being honest, I'm not trying to start anything but I just call it how I see it. I know for a fact I'm not the only one around here either.

Wait, wait, wait....I speculate that you're comparably in a better financial situation than the O/P based on the fact you can afford to own and maintain three Mustangs of different era’s and also able to carry on an engine build pet project on the side.

...and which point you go off on me claiming that I'm criticizing your opinions and life experiences?

.....and I'm the one who's out of line here?

I can appreciate someone wanting to be honest, but try being a little realistic along with said honesty?

Well i guess it depends on what u want, if u want to drive something around everyday and get ur ass handed to u by the Ls1 crowd go with the 4.6, if ur on a budget and want to have something pretty fast, (by pretty fast i mean u wont have to tuck ur tail between ur legs when a Ls1 pulls up next to u) go with the 5.0! I have both a '01 GT and and '88 coupe!

You do realize that the 5.0L Mustang is no faster than the 4.6L Mustang in stock form, right....and considerably slower when you start getting into the '99-up models

First off, this "engine build pet project", by the time I'm done, will be 2 years in the making, for JUST the top end and accompanied mods.

If you think think I'm taking you wrong, maybe you should re-think the way you phrase your opinions to other members. I'm sure it wouldn't be so hard for someone as great and wonderful as the all-knowing, mighty God's gift to Stangnet "Gearbanger101".

At least that's how you come off to most people that I typically associate with around here.

Second, if you think I'm Donald ****ing Trump, I will take and post pics of my junk (and that's what most of it is) tomorrow. Then you can see the great life I'm living with all my money. I guess it doesn't matter that between me and the wife that over 100 hrs a week (plus occasional side jobs ) are put in so that we can support the Mustang addiction we have.

Forgot more than I'll ever know huh....your brashness amuses me. If I had more time, I might have just put you to the test on that one smart guy.

As far as questions....sure....my question is, when did this become who can build the fastest car for the least amount of money and jump all over one and other pissing contest?

The O/P asked what either engine was like, how they were to work on and what the aftermarket suport was like for either car.

It seems as though you'd rather turn this into a modular vs OHV grudge match and throw the original point right out the window.

...in which case, this thread has run its course. Thanks for particpating everyone
