what do the numbers in the oil name mean?

i'm using my friends name to ask this, but what does the 5 in 5w10 mean, and what does the 10 mean,? thanks, sorry sutch a dumb thread

5 is the cold weight, 10 is the hot weight, the w is weight
5w30 is thiner then 10w30 in the cold, but same when hot

exactly, the oil is thinner in the cold so its easier to start when its cold. As is heats up it thickens.

Actually, the W is for Winter -- but the point is mute.
