What does removing the silencer do?

in there tech thread theres a link that shows how to remove the silencer from your air filter.. why would you want to do this?

The "why" is that it removes a major restriction from your air intake system. Take it out and it will be obvious why its an improvement. To get it out, remove the air filter housing and filter, then remove the housing base from the fenderwell. Remove the silencer from the inside of the fenderwell, reinstall the housing and you're done.

It 'supposedly' frees up about 2hp, i would waste your time...but if you want just unhinge the filter cover and unscrew it (i think, i've never done it)

I read over in one of the 4.6 threads that removing it takes away some of your low end torque. Don't know if it's true or not though, my car didn't have one when I got it.

I saw a dyno that showed a 9hp/11trq gain with the removal of the air silencer, and a K&N filter. No losses at all through the power band.

It's about 80mm in diameter, so that would be bigger than most throttle bodies out there.

It's probably there to smooth out airflow. Knowing how Ford, they wouldn't waste money for no good reason. I would think, anyway.

Yeah but look at how large the opening is if you remove it. Lots of air. It's not worth it with a stock filter. I think Ford just put it on to quiet the car for the more domesticated buyers.

there are sound decibel thresholds which a car must meet - and the the name of the device says what it does.
95.0Stang, it would have been nice if in the test, they had dyno'd baseline, then with the K&N and silencer, then K&N and no silencer. i wonder how much of the gain was just the air element - and if the silencer bottlenecks a cotton gauge filter (to see if the silencer really matters).

when i got the stang, i had nothing but the manual as a resource. i looked all over for the silencer, and could not find it. come to find it was gone.

on a stock engine there is absolutily no hp gain, a CAI on a stock engine has no effect either......the CAI is just for looks, u can put a k&n filter in the stock box and it will be exactly the same.......now if u have major mods a cai will benifit u or removing the silence which is basicly the same thing

No way man, taking out my air silencer and putting on the CAI gave me 15 HP. The stickers on my fenders gave 3hp, and my aluminum wing out back gave me way more down force in the corners yo'.













J/K. Taking out the silencer can't hurt, and its free. The CAI frees up a lot of space in the engine bay for spark plug removal, and looks nice to boot. I would say take the thing out and decide for yourself.

My intake silencer is gutted.
I removed the inner liner and the piece that hangs to the side.
Now I get cold air through it without a restriction.
