What does this mean for the 2011 w/Brembos?

In this month's issue of Automobile magazine, their long term test GTR needed new Brembo brakes. Here's the quote from the article..

"22,872 miles The brake squeal is unbearable, and our dealer tells us that it's time for replacement. Total cost for pads, discs, fluid and labor? A staggering $7346!"

Notice that the Brembos lasted only 22K miles. There is also only one supplier to get replacement parts for these. Now, I realize there is probably a GTR premium but are the new Mustang Brembos going to cost thousands more than normal brakes to replace? And wear out twice as fast? Are the Brembos that are new to the GT the same as on the GT500 and if so what's their longevity and replacement costs been on the GT500?

That 7k is prob half labor by a stealership. You can practically get carbon ceramic for that price. Thus I dis not order factory brembos. Unless they are 6 piston caliper brembos, they are simply watered down versions where there is a fat profit margin for brembo to supply them in mass production.

I will wait for stockers to need replacing and upgrade to 6 pistons upfront. The brembos on my 350z track edition were not worth the price of admission.

Yes, stealerships will charge a massive premium IF you buy replacements parts through them. For instance, my old Mitsu. Evo VIII's Brembo's needed rotor replacement after 25,000 miles (lot's-o-track use) to the tune of $700 a rotor! Did I pay that price? Hell no! I went with a set of Stoptech replacements for just over $200 a disc (or $400.00 for 2-piece).
My point is this will be a popular option on the '11 and aftermarket companies will be making replacement disc's that are as good if not better then the stock Brembo's (assuming the disc's are even made by Brembo).
And to the poster above wanting a set of 6 piston calipers, pad replacement alone comes in around $700 compared to $100-$250 for pads used on a typical 4 piston setup.

That is GT-R, and it seems to be front and rears pads wit new rotors and a brake system flush plus dealer labor rates. Mustang brakes will be "normal" price or as normal as they get for Brembos. To reference you can just look up how much Brembo kits are for the 05-10 and get an idea of what parts will cost.

Thanks for posting this. I'm usually one to get all the performance goodies, but I might forego the Brembos after reading that the regular Ford brakes preformed nicely and the Brembos are:

Expensive to option
Expensive to replace/repair
Are only on the front wheels

I'll get the regular brakes and can always upgrade if desired later on (doubt it- not autocrossing).

I can't help but think the 14" rotors under normal driving are less likely to be damaged from heat and warp as they have so much surface area to dissipate heat.

Am I vain for thinking larger rotors look cool in addition to the improved stopping power? Many people go to different wheels for aethetic reasons and larger rotors help fill out larger wheels.

Guys, the GT500s have had Brembos since 2007. It's not going to be a $7,000 brake job. It'll be a little bit more than the standard brakes but that's obvious, it's not going to be much more though.

Exactly Nasty...and I got mine on ebay for $750.00 which included a set a 14" StopTec 2 piece rotors. I also baught the J&M SS brake lines for $150. So for thousand dollars you just can't beat these brakes.

I would think it has something to do with it being on the GTR .. Everything is VERY expensive .. Washer fluid prob $20 a quart for that thing ...lol

Heat dissipation is largely dependent on how hard the brakes are working (i.e. vehicle weight & hp). Obviously a similar kit designed to manage a 3000lbs. vehicle will manage heat better then a 3600lbs. vehicle.
Also let's not forget the larger the brakes the more unsprung weight the suspension has to deal with. Unless you track your car much (and I'm not talking 1/4 mile) I'd skip this option.

gtrs also the car that they have a 20,000$ trans, that they only recommend launching it like 12 times before you replace it.

i would have to replace my trans everynight. hahah.

its gunna be pricier then run of the mill brakes, but i'm sure they hold up to abuse alot better then regular brakes.

feel like a moron, but heavygt, something like those, are you able to go to advanced auto or something similar, tell them you have a 2007 gt500 to get the brake pads for them? or are brembo something you gotta go directly to brembo to buy the pads?

not talking throwing some duralast brakes or anything haha, just thinking how convenient are they to get. like how available.

i'd love to throw a nice big brake kit on my car, but obviously with a 15x4 front wheel i think i'm pretty much maxed out for brakes right now.

Pads for a GT500 will sufice. You can get them pretty much anywhere.

Something to consider though, that $1700 not only covers the new front brakes and rotors, but it also upgrades the rears to 2-piston calipers and larger rotors, new wheels (which would cost $1000 alone for other 19" available), and a ESC tune (not that this should really cost anything).

Maybe this still isn't worth the premium, but at least it's more that just new front brakes. Plus those wheels IMO look pretty sweet on this car.

The tires are also upgraded.
