How do you determine what engine you have in a 66 Mustang? I bought the car and I do not know if the engine in it is the original engine.

Look at the casting number and casting date of the block.

Block casting number is behind the starter, you have to remove to read.

First of all do you have a 6cyl or a 8cyl?

IF its a 8cyl its probley a 289 or if the owner changed to a 302. take the valve covers off you will find a 289 or 302 stamped in it. if you want to know the block you take off the intake manifold off and its stamped into the lifter valley.

another way is to look up the date code which is at the end of the engine its like a small area right next to the intake manifold.

Block casting and date code is above the starter. Crawl under the car and using a drop light, look up above the starter. If you cannot see them after claeaning the crud off the block, you'll have to pull the starter. Just because the block and heads have 289 or 302 cast into them, doesn't guarantee that's what it is, only the crank and rods tell for sure. After 40 years, it could have anything in there.

Wow D.Hearne were not trying to find out what stroke this thing has, all we are doing is finding out what block he has. If its casted into the block 289 or 302 thats what it is.. unless some guy put the casts on wrong to the wrong blocks those # on the heads and block should be right.

Its should tell you everything about the block. Not the heads you need to pull the valve covers to find the date codes for the heads.

Actually, the question was what engine he has, not what block.

All Hearne was doing was pointing out that regardless of what the block code reads, until you measure stroke you really can't be sure what is in there. It could be a 289 block with 302 guts or vice versa. 40 years is a long time. Hearne is right.

Found my casting number : C8OE-6015-A, I know the C8 means the year is a 68. How do I tell if it is a 289 or a 302 ?

Go back and read post #6 again..... The actual date it was cast is a number/letter/number(s) combo next to the casting numbers. The first number is the year of the decade it was cast(and the decade is determined by the 1st and 2nd characters of the casting number), the letter is the month, alphebetically with "A" for January thru "M" for December they skipped the letter "I", the last number or numbers is the day of the month.

Your block may be for a 302, but that doesn't mean it's not filled with a 289 crank and rods. THESE parts determine what engine you have. No, if's, ands or buts about it. 68's had both engines.

I guess the only way to really know is to inspect it while it is apart for a rebuild, which wont be for sometime. Thanks for all the help. At least I know it is not the original motor that it came with.

I need some edu-mication on this. Isn't the cylinder bore on a 289 smaller than a 302? I thought that Ford used up its remaining 289 blocks for 302s and that a stamped 289 could be either bore, while a 302 is always a 302.

No, Krash, the 289/302/351 windsor engines all had a 4.00 inch bore.

Ditto on what Maxpower said, and in addition to that, after 40 years have passed, there's a good chance that whatever the block was built into, isn't what it is now. If you want to know the actual displacement you have to measure the stroke or look at the crank & rod numbers.

Yeah, 289s had a 2.87" stroke an 5.155" rods whereas the 302s had 3" stroke and 5.09" rods. The pistons had the same pin height so they'll interchange.
