What gauge?

What gauge metal is used on the inner side of the front frame rail extension, directly inboard of where the outer bumber bracket bolts to? If I just need to patch a hole in that, is it better to replace with one of the short frame rail sections, or can I just weld in a sheet metal patch and grind the welds smooth?

If the only damage is in a flat area, no problem. If the damage extends to corners, though, get the section.
