What grade oil was used before 5-20?

What grade oil was used in the 4.6 prior to changing to 5-20?

5-30?

Yes, Ford recomended 5W30 prior to 5W20, given no engineering changes were made to the engine and Ford did not send out any type of TSB about this for earlier cars many people think this was done as a CAFE measure strictly as a method of slightly bumping up fuel economy by a fraction of a MPG.

ford had no choice but to try and squeeze out as much mpg as possible from the modular motors. The fuel economy is pathetic (my '03 5.4 expedition and the rising fuel costs are eating a nice chunk out of my wallet.... )

So what would you guys recommend as a good oil grade for our 4.6 stangs?

if money isn't a concern, 5W30 Redline, otherwise mobil one 5w30

ok those are syns? cause my car has 30000 on it and has been running castrol in it. Will I run into problems switching?

5-30 I thought thats what I heard previously. I'm going back to Fords orginal design oil, not their 5-20 recomendation. The 5-20 was obviously chosen to put money back into Fords profits to satify CAFE and was not chosen in the best interest in the life of my car!

Please don't let this start the weekly oil shoot out!
