The shop did not want to take the blame, but eventually they ended up paying about half and giving me store credit for the rest. Later i hear that this has happened before and that you have to retorque some of these wheels after a couple of days once they are first put on.

all wheels should be retorqued after about 25 miles. read the paper work next time you have some tire work done. it is there is the bottom with the fine print.
