I have a 1997 cobra all stock. I am looking for the best mufflers and headers for my car that will improve sound and performance. Should I go x or y and who has the best products.

I heard bassani gives the best sound and hp but that is what i heard. Go with the X over the y. I have 2 chamber flows and dont know how much hp it gave me but it sounds awsome. I would have gotten bassani but you need major $. Almost $900 for bassani catback and x-pipes and a little cheaper for the bx version.

I asked the same question and it seemed for sound as far as exhaust goes Magnaflow Magnapacks or Borla Stingers was the way to go.

If you check out the exhaust site, they would probably say for power: x pipe and straight through mufflers just don't get slp(weird sound). However the x pipes tend to be raspy. Why on earth would you put a y pipe on a cobra? Can you even get a y pipe for your car? Not meaning to sound rude or anything. I just have never heard if a y piped cobra!!

I assume you meant X or H pipe....... "Most impressive sound" Everyone has different tastes. The H & X pipe as well as the mufflers change the sound of your exhaust the most. The H pipe is significantly louder than an X pipe. That's impressive to many. An X pipe has a very unique tight aggressive sound but is not overbearing. That's impressive to many others. The X pipe usually outperforms an H especially on the high end. pricing is comparable. Then you have a multitude of mufflers available some with unique sounds. Prices range. Long tube headers are almost always a nice performance addition but should not affect the sound of the exhaust greatly. Think about the type of sound you want, the performance you want, how much money you want to spend and then start narrowing down your choices. Good Luck.

performance AND sound ??

Sounds like you need a VHS (Dr.Gas) x-pipe. Some people can't stand the sound (similar to a NASCAR exhaust note), but the HP increases are hard to argue with.

Send Nazman (here at 'stangnet) a PM......... he can clue you in.

There is no louder/softer between the H/X-pipe, i'm not sure where this is coming from. They are as loud as each other, depending on the muffler/header setup. Your mufflers are going to work with the X/H-pipe to give it the sound you want. I haven't heard an X-pipe setup i've liked yet. The H-pipe is going to give it a deeper tone with more rumbling around idle and takeoff; much like the distinct 5.0 sound, but hollower on the 4v's. The X-pipe gives it a higher pitched, european/exotic sound, but with only 8cyl I think it sounds funny.

My personal fav: Longtube headers, offroad h-pipe, two chamber flowmasters. It's deep and rumbly at idle and drones so bad you can't hear your passenger around 2k

V8 mustangs do NOT have a Y-pipe, Camaro's do.

Best performance cat-back exhaust - Magnaflows
Best headers - any good Long tube setup except MAC (MAC=Crap)
X pipe for better top end HP, H Pipe for better low end torque

peace

My setup: UPR X-pipe into 2 chambered original flows, sounds awesome. H-pipes are too poppy and boring sounding for me. The X-pipe has a dirtier, more metallic roar to it. I don't think an h-pipe is any rumblier at idle then my setup, mine pants and rumbles with the best of them. My car has a very p!ssed off tone to it and I love it. About a month ago, a truck was tailing me for a bit and I didn't know why. Eventually he pulled up beside me and the passanger yells "nice exhaust broooo" as they drove by. Everyone who has heard it in person loves it too.

The shape of the X-pipe makes a difference. Trubendz, VRS, and UPR have similer bends, and seem to be the best sounding pipes, with the Dr. Gas being the best sounding. Problem is, the Dr. Gas costs around $350 while the UPR costs $139.99. Not only that, but you have to pay out your @ss to have the Dr. Gas welded and installed, whereas I installed the UPR myself. Definately a much better buy IMO.

Hmmmm here is what I think

Bassani, BBK, VRS X pipes- raspy exotic
H pipes- deep
Magnaflow, Dr. Gas- deep in lower RPMS, exotic in high RPMS

chambered mufflers- more metallic sound, hollow sound
Borla/ Bassani- higher pitched then chambered mufflers, more exotic
Magnaflow- deeper/ throatier sound

Confused yet? lol

I have BBK Longtubes, Bassani x-pipe and Bassani Side exhaust and trust me the sound is unlike anything you have ever heard it soo exotic... I have had many combinations and this is the best hands down.. I had the Borla side exhaust and it doesn't hold a candle to the sound of the Bassani... I also had a pair of Dynomax Straight through muffs and they were louder than helll...

Besides with the Bassani exhaus and the svo side exhaust panels it's a deadly combo...
