I have to get new pas side molding for the door. BUt i was wondering what would happen if i just pulled them both off. I might like the way it looks. i know it would steel have molding from the bumpers but it might look pretty cool.
It's just super sticky double sided tape. It wouldn't look consistant with the rest of the moldings on the quarters and bumpers where that molding is molded as part of the bumper itself so it can't be removed. Some poeple have done it with 86 and older stangs and it kinda works.
im pretty sure its a metal clip thats goes into the door that holds the molding on it sort of slide onto a bracket, i agree with Bolt On 5.0 that it would look stupid.
theres actually a metal bracket in there that attaches to the door and some people take the bracket out and just use double sided tape, becauase the metal bows over time and pulls the moulding away from the door panel. i agree that it would look pretty bad
Get a heat gun and then take them off. The tape is crazy sticky. They curl up like a banana when you take them off, so they cannot be reused. Good thing you have new ones. Be careful not to scratch up your paint job.
The side moldings at the doors are held on with the mother of all adhesives. Apparently, it is a two part deal.
The actual molding is simply a piece of rubber. The "tape" is a piece of metal with adhesive on both sides.
Normally, when you remove them, the metal with the adhesive comes away from the body and stays with the rubber. They can be separated if you insist.
There are some threads here and elsewhere on how to remove, clean and reuse them. The body shop r&r'd them on my 79 when they painted it in 93.
I got them off of the 82, and did not reinstall after painting. I think if you keep them straight, and clean the adhesive off the metal, you can reattach them with molding adhesive. I had a short one that fell off, pass rear fender area, and that's how I put it back on. It held for 2 years until I took it off to paint.
u can saw them off with mig wire! then clean off the adhesive. on the 87-93 gt i personally dont think it would flow very well with out the door mouldings!but other years like the four eyes can get away with it svo came with minimal moulding like none on the doors
hmmm yah i looked at it tonight(picturing it wihtout it and it would look stupid as all hell.But my driver side is perfect.im only gonna redo the pas. side. but for now im gonna rip it off and just leave it off till i find a new(used) one then i will stick it on with molding adhesive...
