What is reason this hole is in the 4.6 block?

While replacing the clutch in my '99 GT, I noticed the hole in the drivers side rear of the block. Can someone tell me why it is there and if there is supposed to be something covering it? You can see the hole in the lower right of the attached picture.

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks for the response, but the starter is actually on the other side of the block.

I was thinking that also, but that is the only thing I would believe fits that hole. The good thing is that as long as the flex plate covers things and you didnt remove anything, then it is one of those don't worry about it Ford items

The flex plate doesn't cover the hole, you can see the back of the flywheel thought the hole. It just seems strange to me.

The hole I'm curious about is in the lower left of those two pictures.

My guess is a inspection hole for the clutch? I was trying to figure it out when I pulled out my drivetrain, but mine was covered with a rubber insert

Thanks Danny,

I guess I'm just missing the rubber cover then. All you can see through the hole is the back of the flywheel. I wonder if it could be used to attach the torque converter in an automatic car?

That's actually a great point now that I think of it
