Im just trying to figure out what this is. Do you think it would hurt to replace it with just a elbow?

ok here it is, it is small so i hope you can see it. it comes off the base of the intake plenum and goes to the intake pipe

That's the IAC vent/filter. It's there to protect the IAC solenoid from any dirt or contamination. I know it's fugly, but I wouldn't replace it with an elbow.
The picture is pretty blurry. Is he talking about the small plastic box that runs from the intake tube to the IAC? I was always under the impression it was more a muffler, than a filter?
I can't see there being any real harm in getting rid of it, provided you’ve got a good quality air filter keeping the dirt out. I ditched mine in lieu of a strait length of heater hose.

The IAC valve is actually flow rated with the IAC filter in place. When you get rid of that filter, you change the flow going into the IAC valve. The IAC filter contains a finer element compared to the intake air filter. It's usually not a good idea to remove the IAC filter.
Ehhh, maybe I'll put it back on again. I suppose I'm not lucky enough for it to be unidirectional, am I? Not sure with the new routing if the filter will go on the same way?

It's one of those deals where I have seen some failed IAC's and the guy had removed the IAC filter, then again I have seen some cars without the IAC filter and no problems with the IAC.
I guess I would just rather keep it on just for a little extra longevity from the IAC.
Well, I just wen't to reinstall my old one, but as I suspected it's as hollow, just as I thought.....sans anything that would resemble any sort of filtering component. Perhaps we're talking about two different parts, but I can't think of anything else that should be on the line between the IAC and the intake tube? I'm sure it's just a muffler and not a filter like you originally stated.....at least as far as the 4.6L SOHC goes.
ya that is the whole reason i replaced mine because it was hollow and i thought it didnt do anything. I put it back on tho.

You know, I'm glad you went and looked at that thing, because I never would have.
I just looked at a few I had here and they are all hollow just like yours. That's so strange that all the service/parts manuals refer to them as a filter. Who knows.After looking at it more closely, it looks like it is a type of suppressor to keep the idle more quiet like you suspected. I don't think a 3/4" hose would hurt anything after looking at it.

so the stupid box does nothing.....i dont want quiet....what size hose you guys replace it with..??
It's not going to make that big of a difference....as far as sound goes. As Kevin stated, it's only going to be noticed at idle and even then it's not something you're going to hate while it's there, or miss while it's gone.
As far as to what size hose should be installed in it's place......V
