what kind of oil?

what weight oil would you recommend? i have a 67 coupe with a 289 that appears to be basically a stock engine, not recently rebuilt. i am in Alabama so it gets hot in the summertime. the car does have a/c if that matters.

If it's a daily driver I'd go with either 10W30 or 10W40, I'm going to add a can of STP oil trmt. with my next change since they're no longer putting enough ZDDP in the oil for our old flat tappet hydraulic cams, it is in the STP, I've read it's also in Synpower and GM EOS?

My car came with standard oil, first oil change was to a synthetic blend, next one will be full Mobil 1 + STP. I'll use either 5W30 or 10W30 depending on what I can find with the STP as it thinkens 10W30 up to 10W40 range.

I was going to give the obligatory "use the search, this has been discussed ad nauseum" in a case like this(because it has). However, something is screwed with the search right now and searching for "oil" doesn't return anything, even when searching the whole site.

With that, I use 10w-30, 10w-40, and 15w-40, depending on what's less expensive. Use the fancy synthetic oils and zinc additives at your own discretion. Chances are that if your cam hasn't been wiped out by now, it's not going to be just from using whatever oil is on the shelf at the parts store.

Before anyone cleverly points out that my '68 has a roller cam, I use the same petroleum oil in that as I do in the SVO. The SVO has a slider cam that is broken just like a flat tappet V8 would be and is just as susceptible to getting wiped out.

thanks for the advice

just so you know, I did attempt the search for "oil" and didn't get any results. thanks for the input. sounds like Castrol 10W40. Are there any reasons not to add a shot of STP?

The Search function doesn't recognise words under four characters long. So "Oil" won't return any results, but "ZDDP" will find a good selection of threads.

How long has been set like that? It already has the 30sec limit on search frequency to keep DOS-style flood attacks down.

What if you need to search for "gas cap, fan, hub, or nut?" None of those work either and are all perfectly legitimate search strings for this forum. It also means that searching for "engine oil" only returns hits for "engine."

Mobil 1 15-50 or Valvoline VR1/Racing still have enough ZDDP in them for our engines. I just used the Valvoline oil in my 289 and my dads I6. It's a little more expensive, but IMO it's worth it.
