What might cause the battery light to stay on?

Like the title says my battery light is on. My voltage gauge reads fine and it doesn't seem as though I'm having any charging problems. No relevant computer codes. I was messing around with running a short belt but now I'm back to the stock setup. What could it be?

Thanks
Dave

check your battery voltage w/ a meter and see how much voltage your getting w/ the car running.stock guage is garbage.alt. might not be giving you enough charge.

First off, it's an optima red top, and it reads about 14.3 from what I remember (did that as soon as the light came on four days ago)

When you first start your car, you should see appx 14.4V. After a while, it should read around 13.6 or so. That is the voltage regulator seeing the battery is charged and stepping the charging current down.

To be honest, I don't know how the battery light works. I imagine there is some sort of sensor that goes off when the battery voltage is low. Someone on here must know where it is. It might be bad.

i have the same problem in my car. the senior techs at my dealership said it was the voltage regulator in the alt. i think i have a 93 alt in my 94 and that might be the problem in mine.

If you have a '93 alternator, you lost half of your charging amps.

i have never had a problem charging or starting my car. i put an optima red top in it to see if that was the problem and it wasnt. one of the connections on the alt is different from a 95 cobra that came in the shop where i work the other day. so i think its the wrong one and thats whats setting it off

when I installed a 94/95 alt in my 92 I had the battery light come on. Mine turned out that the little thin stator plug needed to be pushed together so it made a solid contact with the alternator side of it. once that was done battery light went off. Might want to check that small plug and make sure it's solid since your not having charging this may be the problem?
