What oil for a T-5?

I am going to change me tranny fluid. I am pretty sure a non-WC T-5 uses ATF, but Ive had some people tell me that they have ruined a T-5 with ATF.

EDIT: And how much?

I am one of the few that runs Syncromesh in mine. I like it. No problems yet.

I "think" that Mercon / Dextron ATF is the rcommendation on it, though. Don't hold me to it. I'll let some one else chime in on it ....

Ok I just found something that says 70wt gear oil is what should be used in a non-wc T-5.

If your trans is stock, it's a WC T5 and it uses Mercon like Justin said. It takes ~2.6 quarts.

Save the gear oil for your hot tub escapades and use the ATF.

You got it regarding the WC T5 part. Mercon or your favorite synthetic Mercon are the way to go.

Ok I got some Castrol ATF (Meets DEXRON III and MERCON requirements).

That will work right?

And none of the parts stores around here have hand pumps for the oil. They are useless I tell you.

If you have a little RTV at home you could drain the tranny from the drain plug...and just take off your shifter from the tranny and pour the fluid in thru there. Then use the rtv apround your shifter when you reinstall it. Yea its 4 bolts instead of a fill plug but its much easier if you ask me.

Through the shifter, FTW! It really does make life so much easier that way, as long as you don't spill the ATF all over the interior as I've come VERY close to doing once.

Yea they havent used NWC T5's for a while now. I learned that during my re-build. Use ATF as previously stated. I used ATF-4, Well because its free at work And i feel its much better to do it from the shifter but you should have someome look under the car and be ready to put the fill plug back in once they see the tranny fluid start to spill out of the fill hole. I love these T-5's they are so easy to work on

Why would you need to have the fill hole open if you are filling from the shifter?

Because if you fill it to the top of the shifter then you have majorly overfilled it. And otherwise you really dont have much of an idea if its at the right level or not

Also if you dont have another person there just make sure your have some sort of silence and a drain bucket under there and just fill till you hear it spill and try and get under there quickly to put the fill plug back in.

I dont thing it would be that hard to put ~2.5 quarts in it from up top.

Sounds like a one man job to me.

But Ill probably make it a 3 man and 24 beer job.

Yep. That's the best way. Remove plug. Fill from top until it runs out of the plug. Put plug back in and get ATF all over your hands. Only way I do it.
