What should I do with along with the PI headswap?

Ok guys i have my heads and stuff for my PI swap that I am gonna do. BUt what I want to know is what else should i do while i am doing this? Should I have the heads ported or get some VT stage 2 cams or get Long tube headers? What should I do. I dont have the money to do all of them at the same time just one of them. I am thinking of doing the cams while I am at it. What do you guys think.

if you do VT2 cams you need springs too. LT's would be a good choice.

you can also port the plenum while it's out.

Do it all! Thats exactly what I did. But if you cant afford it, I say do the cams. But like Tomustang said, get the springs as well. I think youll get more of a power increase from the cams than you will the longtubes.

my personal opinion is that you have an oportunity to get more power out of these heads than guys that haven't removed and modded their heads.

3 or 5 angle valve job = 65 dollars = more flow.

mill .025 = higher compression = more power.

open up exhaust w/flapper wheels and pocket port bowl if you have skills. = little more flow = more hp

remove swirl brows = less shrouding back side of valves = little more flow.

deshroud valves .010 = little more flow.

larger 1.8 intakes = more flow

all added together with $599.00 cams = more power for dollar.

i assume higher octane fuel is not a poroblem for you if you are going for VT's

if vt's have tighter centerline 108 or 109 degrees higher C/R will maximize output.

that's my story and i'm sticking to it

you will notice bigger cams recommend higher than stock C/R.

I would say cams w/ the springs to match, but you may need (probably need) a tune with the stage 2 cams to get everything out of them. So if you have the extra money for the tune then do it! When I was stockpiling parts last winter for the swap I regret not getting cams and LT's, instead I got nitrous, which I could have gotten anytime. In retrospect, it would have been a much better decision to get LTs and cams when everything was apart...good luck man, maybe just save for another month or two and get it all.

Yeah I was thinking about just going with the cams and springs and leaving it at that. I dont want to much power so I really dont need the heads ported because I will prolly use nitrous in the future so Im not really worried if the car isnt a horsepower king.

definately do the cams and springs while the heads are off...so much easier. also might want to pop a new water pump in while your at it since you have to remove the old one anyway. I don't know what your mileage is but maybe replace timing chain and guides etc.. I didn't do it when I did my PI swap but I will install all new guides etc with the ported heads and cams.

I second that for the water pump and guides, its just making it that much more reliable, I did mine while it was all apart, I painted everything too, valve covers, timing cover, alternator, intake, coolant reservoir and some other stuff I am probably forgetting...anyway, you get the point, do as much as you can while its apart cause its the prime time to have access to this type of thing
