What used parts are good purchases?

Title kind of explains it.. I was thinking the other day and alot of people can't afford brand new parts for every single thing on their rides.. So what are the good pieces to buy used (obviously price is the biggest factor) but what parts are good buys that are ok to buy used and not worry too much if your getting a good part or a pos. I would say safe bet buys are shifters and CAI's. What else out there are good used pieces to pick up?

Stay away from used suspension components and used wear items like bearings, brake pads, and clutches.

Ok so say cams, gears, and power adders.. what about these?

With parts like exhaust it is pretty easy to see if it is damaged and that sort of thing. But with cams, you must get really detailed pictures or buy from a reputable seller. Same with gears. I have friends that would buy used gears but I personally would not.

Power adders like blower kits are another story. I would probably buy everything except for the fuel pump/injectors and maf used. Then you must use paypal and make sure the pictures do the parts justice. And of course you really need to research a forum/eBay member's history if you are gonna drop a couple grand on a blower kit.

Shifters, intake, throttle body, plenum, exhaust (easy to inspect), seats, springs... most bolt on parts that don't have a lot of moving parts, or wearable parts.

Stuff like engine parts, power adders, etc. would require a real close inspection as said above. I think I'd be most weary about buying a used nitrous kit.

What makes nitrous kits the most weary thing out there? As far as power adders I would have thought turbo/supercharger since if you don't maintain those with the correct oil they wont work correctly... I am just looking for a few lessons from experienced people on where I can save money and where I need to fork over money for new stuff.

I would take into account how much the items cost brand new, how much the shipping will be, and what condition they are in. This is probably what I would look to spend...

Used cams - $300 tops
Used supercharger kits (depending on brand, tuner kit, or full kit) - $1500 -$2000 tops
Used Patriot heads (or other reputable company) - $800 tops
Used headers (depending on condition, ST, or LT) - $150 (chrome) - $250 (ceramic) tops
Used programmer - $150-$200 tops (maybe $250 for unlocked Sniper SF with both bullets)
Used injectors (24lbs/30lbs/36lbs/42lbs/60lbs) - $100/$150/$150/$200/$240
Used MAF depending on brand, size, and calibration - $100-$200 tops
Used UDP - $70 tops
Used upper plenum and TB - $50 (separately) - $125 (both pieces together) tops
Used gears - $75 tops
Used O/R X-Pipe - $50 tops

That is true, but you can check for shaft play and any glaring defects fairly easily.

I say nitrous because someone could have had a problem with the solenoids and not tell you, and you'd never know until one sticks open or closed, or doesn't work period. Bottles could have been dropped and re-painted, excessively torched, wiring could be a mess (faulty, damaged), etc.

I buy and sell a lot of parts and I stick to the above. I steer clear of most used parts that could pop the engine and stick to new for those types of items.

for used parts everybody has been really helpful but i just realized Tillman Speed is having a clearance sale on some new parts which wouldn't be bad either.
