What wheel size suits you?

You still make no sense here. Go to tirerack.com and pick a set of 17's for your car, then check the overall diameter of the tire that is the largest recommended size. Then pick a set of 20's and check the diameter again. They will be almost exactly the same. What I'm saying here is that a 17 will have more sidewall, a 20 will have less, but they will be the same basic height. That's not to say that you might be able to search around and maybe find a 20 with a larger diameter...maybe.

Example: A 17"x9 wheel on an '05 Mustang has a recommended tire size of 235/55/17 which has an overall diameter of 27.177"

A 20"x9" wheel on an '05 Mustang has a recommended tire size of 255/35/20 which has an overall diameter of 27.027" which is within about 1/10th of an inch.

Thanks for the info Randy ... like everyone, I'm looking for both performance and ride comfort ... assume you don't feel like you're riding on rocks? 35's don't give you much sidewall for flex, but it sounds like you're pleased. I'm no kid (my first new car was a '65 Stang), but I still like to hang out there ...

I'm saying if you want ~4 inches of sidewall on the new car for the purpose of ride quality concerns vs performance or whatever (like I had on my '98 Cobra with 18s and a smaller overall diameter of ~26 inches) but you want to keep the same factory S-197 diameter (~27.17") then you will need a 19 inch rim/tire.

Dawgpndr, I was concerned with ride quality as well as performance. For me, 19s are the perfect balance between all of my considerations. My BFG KDWs are a little noisy, but they provide a lot of grip. My car is also not my daily driver, which made the choice easier. If it was my driver, I may have gone with 18s.

No, what you were saying was, the S-197 has large wheel well openings and you need a larger wheels and tires to fill that opening which makes no sense at all. You would need a larger profile tire to go along with the larger wheel size. Try to find that larger tire diameter, they are virtually non existant.

As far as which wheel size is the max for comfort and performance, it's 18's. All of the road racing engineers like at Steeda for example will tell you NOT to go beyond 18"s for overall optimum performance. Call them, they will tell you that. Those who want higher than 18's are just falling into that "huge wheel" trend, but hey, get what you want, there is a price to pay for such low profile tires and that's your choice. 18's are without a doubt the middle ground from one extreme to the other.

By the way, the stock tires that came on my mustang were about 27" tall. When someone buys 20's to replace them, the new tires will also be about 27" tall, just less sidewall which will do nothing to fill in the large wheel well opening.

old guy to old guy. you're car looks great, i've been trying to find out if a 10" wheel will fit with the tire inside the fender. is this the case? if so, do you know the offsets f/r?

A 10" wheel will fit fine and stay within the wheel well. Stick with a +45mm offset for sure. You can get a 295mm rear tire in there, a 305mm is pushing it a bit, but it will work. On the front, a 275mm seems to be the max. The wider you go in the back, the more important it's going to be to stay close to a 27" tall tire.

Front is a 19x9 with a 35mm and rears are 19x10 with a 45mm as Anthony mentioned.

Aren't the discs for the brakes to big of 10" wheels? or more than likely I'm missing something...

Based on the votes it looks as though 18's are the popular choice, with 20's coming in second.

19's would give you the best compromise of both with better ride quality, less weight, yet still fitting the wheel well without having to drop the springs any.

I'm still sticking with my vote for 20's. While the ride quality and performance go down, it still looks the best to me, plus I like the car to have some ground clearance for speed bumps and the like.

Can't tell you how many times I've scraped the bottom of a vehicle due to a lower ride settings

yokohoma makes a 295/45/19 tire.. that equals a 29.45" diameter.. thats a nice amount of sidewall for a big rim.. its on tirerack as well
