What's Your Automatic Transmission Temperature???

With a killer idea from HISSIN50, I asked Clint to add transmission oil temperature logging to BE for me, so I've been logging it the last couple of days.

Here are the results I have so far:
Day 1: Weather in the 80s. Driving was stop n' go, WOT runs, idling, highway cruising. Highest I got was 174. It took 20 minutes or so to get there.

Day 2: Weather in the 90s. Driving was half stop n' go, half highway cruising. Highest I got was 178. It took about 15 minutes to get there. The rest of the time it hovered around 176ish.

Anyone else watch their tranny gauge? How does yours perform?

My setup is this: 4R70W, B&M stacked plate cooler (8x11), routed inline after radiator heat exchanger, Edge 2,800 stall, somewhat aggressive converter locking schedule.

not to sound noobish... but what does the tranny usually run without a cooler? the tranny im building is going to have a cooler and i will be runnin a gauge as well... just wonderin how much of a difference i am lookin for...

I don't wanna see this get derailed but I was going to bump it to the top for the morning guys anyhow. I hope my post doesn't get us off on a big tangent.

Inphiniti, a cooler is mandatory in our opinions. The stock 'cooler' is a heat-exchanger. It helps regulate trans temps by using the coolant (in the winter, the coolant is hot and brings trans temps up. In the summer, the heat-exchanger can knock a little bit of heat out of the trans fluid). But none of it is enough because we want trans temps at 170 or so, and the heat exchanger can often not accomplish this (especially in these cars when stock - with the hot t-stat and horrid fan thresholds).

I have my gauge's sender located on the line leaving the trans and going to the cooler (I use only a stand-alone cooler. No heat exchanger. I live in the desert and the heat exchanger only heated my fluid up). My goal is to only have temps ever reach 170*F and never go beyond. Until recently, my trans temps were solid at 150-165*F, including driving in 115*F temps. Wes took care of that with some changes ;) and now I'm going to much larger (29,000 BTU) cooler. My old one is a 8 x 11 x .75 stacked plate unit that I figure was good for ~13K BTUs. Dont even bother with something like that - go with Wes's or beyond if it's hot where you are, or you have big power, an often unlocked converter, etc etc. I never imagined having any changes made to my car (and am quite glad they happened :hail2: ) so I went skimpy on the cooler. Do it once and do it right.

Finally............bump.

It'll be neat to see what kind of temps people run with what combos (in what ambient temps too). It will really help AODE guys figure out how much trans cooler they need, if something is weird etc. :nice: And cheers to the ever-smart Mr Wes for pioneering the DLing of TOT's.

The TOT logging (a sensor in the tranny for the oil temp) is in the latest revision of the CBAZA for BinaryEditor, if you purchase BE, you'll be able to datalog and read/write the twEECer. :nice:

I'm going to get ahold of Mike Glover today with the memory locations for the TOT value and see if he can adjust the CBAZA definition in CalEdit/Con as well so that everyone can get to it.

that would be nice :)

that might be a year from now though.

Here's someone else's observations:
I've seen 210 after an acceleration. I have a converter and a small cooler. I may increase the size of my cooler some. When I start the car in the mornings it is close to my ACT/ECT of course.

Mike Glover said that TOT logging was in the next release of CalCon but gave no ETA on it. :)

After 20 minutes my temp was at 150. The outside temp was around 60*. It was creeping up 1* about every minute or so. Little traffic, slow acceleration.

I have a big hayden cooler mounted under my bumper in a bad location

what is a dangerous temp?

After running a little harder on a 70* it went to 160*. Then with just some cursing it got up to 170, but no higher. I am sure if I would have gone WOT, it would have gone up. I have a transmission line either really close, or laying on some exhaust, so that is probably not helping.

I don't think it's too bad to be running around 150, if you are running through the heat exchanger in the radiator, that should bring the temps up around. IIRC, JT's temperatures are around 150-170.

I haven't read anything on having it "too cool" although when the fluid is at ambient temperature you don't want to be beating on it.

I've driven a new gm SUV and it's got a temp gauge in its transmission. When driving calmly at 65 it's around 150. While towing a boat it gets up to almost 200. It's an 07 escalade. Just a baseline of new technology to compare against.

Like Mr Wes noted, I only run a stand-alone stacked plate cooler (no heat exchanger).

In Southern AZ, it can take awhile for the trans temps to come up when it's under 90*F outside. During the winter (highs of 60-70), I see 125* trans temps once warm. I cant get it hotter unless I just let it idle (a heat exchanger would be nice - to bring the fluid up to temp quicker). I really try not to do anything agressive till I can get some heat into the fluid (I think 160*F is pretty optimal).

I measure temps in the line egressing the trans (heading towards my cooler).

Well ... I can't offer anything of value to this thread :(

But ... I just had to give kudos to one who deserves em :nice:

Clint has helped me a few times in the past :hail2:
and
I know for certain many others he done the same for :Word:

If all folks who offer a product to tune a Stang would do the same :D

I'll just leave it at that and say to Clint one more time ;)

Way To Go Sir :)
and
You're a great asset to the self tuning community :Teh-Win:
