Wheel size for Disc brake conversion

I know this question is very common, but I have conflicting information concerning what size rims are possible to use when converting from drum to disc brakes.

I have a 1969 convertible that I want to convert from manual drum to power front disc brakes. I have the 14x6 slotted steel GT rims on the car, which I want to keep. The problem I have run into is almost all of the front disc conversions kits I have read about require 15" or larger rims.

Does anyone know of a front disc conversion kit that will accept 14" rims? I would rather not have to buy new rims and tires too.
Any guidence would be great.

I don't know enough to tell you which would accept 14" wheels, but there are a lot of knowledgeable guys on here who probably do. Check out post #20 on this thread:

In that post, ultrastang makes reference that some disc conversions accept 14" rims. Maybe he or someone else can guide you.

Possibly Scarebird offers a front disc setup that will fit 14" wheels (??). The Granada front discs will fit many 14" wheels --but sometimes requiring the center hole of the wheel being enlarged, or turning the Granada's rotor snout down to fit inside the wheel's center hole, but you would just have to check to verify.

I have a Mk VII conversion bracket that's designed to install the Mk VII calipers with the Versailles rotors on the rear that will work with 14" wheels. I have vintage American Racing 14" x 6" wheels and they clear the 1970 mustang front disc brake assembly.

i ran into the same problem..
you can get the rotors machined to fit behind the 14's i believe
the scarebird conversion does require a machined rotor to fit behind stock size rims as well
this is all for a 66 tho

That is good to know Thunder, but just to be sure, is that a stock 70 disc assembly then? (single piston, 11" rotor, etc...)

Thanks 65Frank and 67Thunder.
It is good to know that disc brakes that work with 14" rims exist.

Now I just have to come up with the $$! Since I already have brand new tires and my steel slotted GT rims are in really good shape, the higher cost for these kits will offset buying a less expensive disc brake kit in addition to buying new rims and tires.

I also found that HotrodUSA (http://www.hotrodsusa.com/) has a kit for 14" rims, but a mounting plate introduces a 1/2" offest (which I would prefer not to do). Eitherway, definitely take a look at (http://www.hotrodsusa.com/) it had a ton of really good information! Cheers.
