I was just wondering if anyone had pics of Mustangs pulling all 4 wheels off the ground on launch. I know Dwayne Gutridge used to do it with some regularity, it was even in an issue of MM&FF but I was trying to see if anyone had any pics online. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

how is a 4 wheeled car supposed to pull all the wheels off the ground? the front tires come up because the back tires get so much grip and the motor has enough power to pull the weight of the car off the ground. the only way it would pull all the wheels off the ground is if the car got a really nasty launch and had horrible wheel hop and the car jumped off the ground or cranked back so hard it levered itself up onto the wheelie bars which would probably break if the car had all its wieght on them

I once saw a video of someone who was, I believe, Scott Budisalich (sp?), a up-and-coming racer in NMRA Hot Street pull all 4 wheels off the ground and ride the back bumper on his LX to a 9-second pass. It was sick... Not sure how the back wheels get off the ground and they don't crash and burn though.

Check that out, I think the link still works.

Ok, so the link works but he doesn't actually get the rear wheels totally off the ground. My mistake, sorry. Cool video though.

Yeah, I have seen the full version of that video. The car actually ends up coming down in the other lane.

ECU5.0,

Doesn't happen often, but it happens often enough to be noteworthy. What happens is the launch is typically so violent that the car almost 'jumps' with enough momentum to pull the back wheels up with it. They usually land fairly okay considering, but header damage as well as minor body damage is common. Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords actually did a feature on Dwayne Gutridge's old Black Turbo Coupe that dominated Drag Radial and had some very cool shots in succession showing the front wheels coming up, the car rising, and the back wheels coming up as well. From memory, I think the rear wheels came 6-8 inches off the ground too. The car wasn't equipped with wheelie bars at the time. Very impressive.

Fair enough. By the way, just found a link that shows one of the pics, and a brief write up on it. If anyone else has some pics of it, let me know. Thanks.

What's worse is he actually has a new car (another coupe) that has just run 7's on BFG Drag radials. Pretty sick stuff.

I DO want to pull up next to him at a stoplight. A wheelstand would just about make my day, I think

I would want to do a crazy dance after seeing a guy right next to me absolutely destroy me on his rear wheels. A dance like this one:

I used to have a video of a guy up in NE, believe his name was Mike Weisberger, hes got a mid 70's Camaro and he gets all 4 off the ground very commonly. He got beat quite a bit by faster cars, but it was still impressive as hell lol, sub 10 second car - wheelie bar = cool show

That's always a good combination

I've also seen a video with a gold Chevelle that goes up on its rear bumper, I wish I remembered where I saw it. The fact of the matter being - it happens, and when it does, its spectacular as a rule.

I was at the track I go to in Spring of 1997. Nice day lots of people. Just a regular test and tune and I was taping a couple buddies... [91 Z, and a then new, C5 Vette]. Anyways we're all sitting in the Stands and this absolutely beautiful burgandy/maroon colored 69 Camaro pulls into the water box and does a burn out. It wasn't back halved, but looked to have 28x10.5" slicks in the back and skinny fronts. He burns out and it sounded big blockish, and really 10s if you know what I mean, so we all pay attention to see....

Pulls up and pre stages, then bumps up a notch, staged, and winds up on the trans brake, tree goes down, he lets it go, and it kinda made a very loud Wuuh-uhh-aaaaAAAAAAAAA then flat screamed at what seemed like 7500 RPM... car lifts straight up in the air, sits there fer a sec, and comes down on the back bumper... car standing straight up and down and everyone in the stands was standing up and ...he lets off... then as the car starts to fall he kinda revs on it to ease the fall, but it came down hard and broke some stuff in the front end. He got out of the car and everyone in the stands was stood up and clapping and screaming and & stuff.. [keep in mind it was most high 11 and slower till he and 3 other cars he was with showed up that day]. The rest of his crew were all non tubbed car running high 8s to very low 10s I remember the low 10 car was a lime green 68-72 Nova.

Last year during time trials i was the last car to go during the clean up round then all the sudden i hear this loud sound and they paired me up with a dragster. i got a front row seat to a 7.56 pass. He was like already back in the pits before i hit the quarter mile line.

I've seen what's being talked about, only without the bumper dragging part. If any of you from Cincinnati have heard of a '55 (maybe 56) Chevy called "Bad Apple", i saw the guy at a local track literally hop the entire car off the line. The car was tubbed, and hooked so hard that when the front end lifted and the car started moving forward, the back tires just kinda hopped right off the track. The whole car bounced about 3 times, and still ran in the 7s. We're not talking about a foot off the track though, but you could clearly see light from beneath the tires.
