Is it common for a machine shop to balance a motor say with a 28oz balancer and 50oz flywheel.... Or would they recommend the client buy a matching piece before balancing? Just sounded a bit off to me. My friend and I were discussing it on his build..
I balanced my engine with a 50oz flywheel from Ford racing with a removable couterweight on it and my stroker kit is designed for 28oz. The guy just removed the counterweight and removed materiel on it until it was balanced with my 28oz damper on the crank.
But the issue with this ,if a balancer or flywheel has problems.Its not gonna be easy to get the new part to balance correct.
I always take new parts(balancer/flywheel) in when i get mine done..That way if i have a flywheel failure(been there)..I can use a off the shelf unit with little issues.
The problem is this...he wants to go to an automatic, and I was trying to help him order a flexplate...just not sure if we should order a 28oz to match the balancer...
YOU have to have the same front and back... 28 0z is the easyest and best for any stroker. the 50 0z is a harder balance when you have aftermarket parts... but do able!! IF you have a 28 oz balancer and a 50 oz flywheel, he will HAVE to make the flywheel into a 28 oz unit!! Flexplate for the Auto... it will cost MORE in labor than to buy the right units!! your shop is right!! He sound like he is trying to do it right and save you a few bucks from the balancer..... cool??

Well, the thing is that they didn't have him order a 28oz flywheel (it is currently manual) when they where balancing the motor...I guess that was what threw me off. The motor has been in the car for about 3 years and he wants to go auto, so I just wanted to make sure that we order the correct weight flexplate...You guys definitely answered my question! I appreciate it!
I suggest that he tries to find the balancer and ask what he does.... MOST guys will make the balancer and flywheel a 28 oz then then remove or add on the crankshaft...... BUT!! there ARE diferent ways of balancing.. I would ask the balancer.. It is do able to mod the 50 oz flywheel to 28 oz.. cool??
Yes it is alot easier to just but two matching pieces front and back that way if somethings happens to one or the other it is more easily replaced. I have purchased Eagle street kits that had 50 oz. flywheels with metal machined out on the back to make them 28. Just get a new balancer and flywheel/flexplate have it balanced by a reputable shop and it will be right. Then if by chance a flexplate brakes or balancer comes apart just re-order the same part number and you will surely be close enough to run. They make flexplates and flywheels in both weights and in both 157/164 so its easy to find the right part.
