Which gasket maker for Steeda underdrive pulley install?

Steeda's instructions for installing their underdrive pulleys includes this step:

Apply a dab of high temperature silicone sealer (gasket maker) to the keyway slot on the underdrive crankshaft balancer pulley. Line up the keyway and install the pulley.

Autozone had two kinds of Permatex Gasket Sealant. Which one should I use?

Hardening

Those are both gasket sealers, you should use a gasket maker like the ultra black

I think I used either the black RTV or the red (high temp). I have both tubes and it's been 5 years.

good. black is better IMO. red woudl hodl SO tight, it is a major PITA to remove red RTV, but it alsmto never leaks. hell even on exhasut gaskets!!

Remember, it's a dab you need, not a huge glob. You can use red, blue, black, or whatever, and it'll still easily come back off with the puller tool. It's RTV, not loctite.

Well, I couldn't get the alternator or crankshaft pulley off. No airtools.

Well, I used my impact wrench only on the alt pulley, but then swapped the stocker back on. My impact gun couldn't turn the crank bolt loose at 120 psi.. so I breaker bar'd that one too.

I have an auto so I have to remove the inspection port to get to the stall converter. I didn't have a way to hold the flywheel still to turn the crank bolt. I'm not sure if I want to jam anything into the teeth of the flywheel. I wish I could engage the gear on the starter without turning it.

Edit: Any ideas on how to hold the alternator pulley and crank pulley in place? I have a 2.5 ft long breaker bar that I can use to turn the bolt.

The method I have used in the past (before I invested in air tools) was to soak the nut in PB blaster for 10-15 mins, then put the correct size socket/ratchet on there, then use a dead blow hammer to smack the hell out of the ratchet. Many refer to this as "shocking" the nut. Just about every time I've tried this, it worked. Obviously the belt needs to stay on for this. You could probably cram a prybar between the alt and the pulley, but why risk breaking something.

Another option would be remove the entire alternator, and bring it to autozone, have them do it. Or, go to Lowe's, buy one of those handy dandy 12v impact wrenches, use it, then return it.. which would be immoral, but would get the job done.

I've heard of holding the torque converter in place on the auto's, but I've done several crank pulley removals/installs on automatics (just did one last weekend actually) and never used that method. It takes much longer to torque the bolt back in properly (the shock method over, and over, and over, and over) but it's possible.

If you don't own the proper airtools, you really need to just remove the alternator and take it to your local parts store. It's not worth the risk of damaging something and/or the front bearing trying to use a breaker bar. They will swap the pulleys for you at no charge.

Thet make a special tool that engages the ring gear on the flexplate to hold the motor still if have to use a breaker bar. Most auto parts stores will let you rent one for free with a deposit. My 1/2" impact wrench and 18mm socket make quick work of the crank snout bolt.

I have never done this swap but if they state that you need "high temp" gasket maker... that's what I would use.

Removing the alternator is a viable option. What about those oil filter wrenches that are like a thick rubber strap? Anyone try those on the alternator pulley?

If not, I've always wanted an electric impact wrench... Or I'll just spend an afternoon at my buddie's place. He has all the tools one could ever need.

Either get an electric impact or rent one (use to be $15 a couple of years ago). Or go to someone's house that has an impact.

Yea, I'll look into an electric impact wrench. I can't justify the cost of a compressor, hoses and air tools yet. Man, I was hoping to get the pulleys installed while my "assistant" was available. I was going to post a thread with full pics and all.

I got an amazing deal on my compressor. Retail was $299.99, I got it for $142.00. It's a 26 gallon, 1.5 hp, 155 max psi. It came with 6 air tools
