Which Oil?

Sorry for the delayed response but I've had computer problems. I would just use 5w-30 year round. You won't have any problems with it in any weather condition. I recommend Amsoil 5w-30 full synthetic w/ Amsoil oil filter. Just my recommendation.

I use RP when I can get it (or think far enough ahead to order some). Mobil 1 when I don't get RP. I always use a Motorcraft 820s filter.

actually, ford specifies that 5W20 should be used. i would NEVER reccomend using anything more than 5w30. the ford 5w20 is a synthetic blend and is is required because if the tight machining tolerances on the modular engines-or the engine wont get proper lubrication. also, being that i work at a ford dealer as a service advisor, and was a technician, i know that ford WILL void a warranty if there is an engine problem due to using the wrong weight of oil. the only ford vehicles that use 5w30 are the ranger and explorer with the 4.0 SOHC, which will soon find its home in the base model mustangs. just figured i would pass on the info for anyone who has warranty.

dude the only reason ford switched to the 5w20 was to get a higher CAFE number. the internal tolerances of the motors did NOT change from the years they recommended 5w30 vs 5w20. just use mobil 1 5w30 and you will be fine. save your receipts and if a dealer like the one above tries to void your warrenty shove the bottle of mobil 1 in their face that says it exceeds the ford spec and they will have to warrenty the work. besides, from what i was told from ford reps when i was working at a L/M dealer is that the 5w20 is only recommended, if you use something higher on the totum like a synthetic then you are using an oil that is far better than motorcraft so therefore is better for your motor. besides the 00 cobra R's come with mobil 1. and if you bothered to learn about fords from other countries you would know that in australia ford recommends at minimum 10w30 on the same exact 4.6 motors used in the US. they are made in the same plants at the same times. hell i know people in australia that use 20w50 in brand new 5.4L BOSS 290 motors that is put in direct from the dealer.

As bdcardinal stated, this is complete garbage. If this were true, Ford would have to change your oil for free. As long as the oil used meets the API specs, you can use it. It's all covered under the Magnuson-Moss Act from the 1970's. Read up on it.

The tolerances didn't change, the CAFE did. The 20 weight oil gains a fraction of a mile per gallon during the fuel efficeney test, and drawn out over the entire fleet it got Ford under the CAFE number for the fleet. That's complete "dealer speak" for "Let us change your oil for $60 a shot".

I have to agree with both bdcardinal and skiddawg on this subject. Ford can NOT void your warranty simply for using a different motor oil other than whats specified as long as it meets or exceeds the specs of the oil recommended by the manufacturer. In this case, thats Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w-20. They also can NOT void your warranty for extended oil change intervals when using a full synthetic oil like Amsoil. This is a misconception by many. They must prove the oil your are using was the cause of the problem. If they try to void the warranty for not changing the oil under normal intervals, simply get an oil analysis kit and test a sample of the oil. If the oil turns out to be fine, then they can't blame the oil for the cause of the problem. I'm running Amsoil 5w-30 right now and may switch to using their series 2000 0w-30 in the future. I will also only be changing the oil once per year and the oil filter once every 6 months.

im wondering if a dealer could try and say if u used a 15/40 type oil you voided your warrenty. i know that ford uses oil like that in other countries on identical motors co could you argue that unless ford mandadtes that 5w20 be used worldwide, then they cannot mandate it in a particular country? just a brain teaser

ya, i was thinking that cause if you could prove that it is safe to use that oil in another country with a similar climate, like lets say they used 15/50 in saudi arabia with an identical motor and you lived in texas which is a similar climate in the summer, a manufacturer wouldnt have any room to talk correct? also in australia i believe you can get castrol syntec as dealer fill.
