which one is easier on the bank

is switching gears and axles in a 8.8 more affordable and more logical than switching to a 9" rearend and changing the rear suspension and buying all the axles and gears.

yes, much less expensive. A built 8.8 can take alot of abuse.

I have seen 8 and 9 second 8.8s... I think you almost answered your question in your post.

Point A -switching gears and axles in a 8.8

Point B - switching to a 9" rearend and changing the rear suspension and buying all the axles and gears
