Koni Red Adjustables dialed all the way down ride very smooth on my 89 GT vert, (even on the friggin 405) and it has H&R Race srpings from MM, so they should be very nice on stock springs.
KYB also has decent stuff

If you are looking for an affordable but quality set of shocks/struts- I think the Tokico blues are absolutely unbeatable for less than $300 for the set.

I think I have a problem here.

For a smoother ride I'd go with something like Monroe or KYB.

But if you want something in a firmer ride and better handling then go with the Adjustable Koni or Bilsteins I've used or had them all, and by far the Bilstein struts are the best in my opinion but I wouldn't say they are the SMOOTHEST RIDING either in my opinion.
