I have a 1979 Ford Mustang Cobra mildly modified 302, certainly not in perfect shape, and a 2013 VW Jetta TDI sedan (~150k miles), that I bought when I was commuting to work. I have since started working from home. My original thought was to try and sell the Mustang for $5000 to buy a Stage 3 kit for the Jetta that claims 215WHP 370WTQ and some supporting mods.
Pros: Fuel mileage, newer vehicle = more reliable?, seats 5, a lot of convenience features (power locks/windows, seat warmers, better stereo), manual transmission
Cons: Issues selling the Mustang, stressing an engine with so many miles, more expensive maintenance and insurance
My new thought is sell the Jetta for roughly the same price ($4000-4500). Put AC back in the Mustang and build a carbed 347 stroker from the 302 and 8.8 rearend (hopefully find one cheap). Certainly more HP and about the same torque as Jetta with Stage 3.
Pros: Cheaper parts without a lot of electronics to worry about, easier to sell Jetta, more unique vehicle (orange, power locks and hatch release), cheaper insurance, C4 with manual valve body
Cons: Aging car = more things that may need to be replaced/harder to find (very brittle dash shell, inner beltline, door pulls), bad fuel mileage and small fuel tank, seats 4
I do not really race but do enjoy pulling on people from a stop light or leaving them in the dust when tailgating. I know the choice is ultimately mine and the ability to sell one of the said vehicles but wondering what non-biased individuals think.
