which tuner to get?

i've been looking at one of those hand held tuners recently, and i was wondering if its ever to early to get one.. only mods so far is a magnaflow catback and a SLP catted X pipe.. gears are just around the corner as well T/B and plenum.. also what would be a good one. i've been looking at the SCT as well as the Predator one.. thanks again for the help..

You might as well buy one when you get your gears. You can do alot of things with it. I went to running premium fuel with mine and gained 20 RWHP off of it. That was the same time I did my 4.10s and they said I might have picked up more than that but the gears will some times show less.

Also I would go with SCT XCal. 2. That is what alot of tuners use.

thanks for the help.. so is it just a plug in play deal or is there anything i would have to do when i'm buying it??

They are plug n play, very easy, took about 5 minutes or less to install mine. Ive not had mine dynoed but my SOTP dyno feels like I picked up a few hp.

Get the SCT X2. The Predator is crap in comparison!

You can get tunes burned on to it. I think I got 2 or 3 burnt on to mine. One was for 93 Oct gas, middle 87 or 91 Oct I think, and I think I had one for regular but all were set up for the 4.10s.

Just buy it from a shop and they can burn them on it for you. It shouldnt cost any extra either, at least mine didn't

The Xcal2 comes with up to 4 tunes. An SCT shop can take your mods and get a tune loaded or you can go to a dyno and have the tune loaded then. After that you can tweak some of the parameters like spark curves, shift points (in an auto) or rev limits. What year is your car?

I do not recommend buying from just any shop. Remember they are tuning the Xcal and would you want a ***** tune or a good tune? Modular Depot, and Modular Powerhouse are good choices.

Incorrect. They come empty with the ability to hold 3 tunes.

For custom/dyno tuning it doesn't matter whether you use a XCal 2 or a Predator. Buy the one that is compatible with the software (SCT or Diablo) your favorite dyno shop or professional tuner uses, unless you are going to do it all yourself.

Find your favorite shop and go with the same they use...mine use SCT so that is what I will get when I buy one. Both look like about the same damn thing, probably is same damn thing, different plastic cover. The machine itself is fairly simple, its what you do with it that matters. It just encodes what you tell it to do.

If im not mistaken I think I saw a "kit" on mustangtuning that came with gears and a SCT tuner. You would save a couple $$.

Gotta agree.
Personally I'll be getting an Xcal2 the 2 step alone is worth it to me. Plus there is a Kinda local shop with outstanding customer support and the guys are super nice.

Useless?? how the F is that not useless, diablo ONLY visits the S197 Section, they have been know to screw over 2V owners before. Haven't heard complaints from SCT owners like diablo does.

Reputation is a HUGE factor in purchasing a product.
