If you want to stay hydraulic, the 270H has similar specs and would be a decent choice. Both 270S and H hav about .5" lift, which is good for a flat tappet cam. To get the most from those heads, you would prefer to have a bit more lift. You'd have to go roller cam for that, which is quite a bit more expensive. Your choice. Stay with a single pattern cam for those heads. The exhaust side flows plenty well and doesn't need help from a split duration cam.

I run AFR 165 non-emissions heads on my '65 289. I did a couple things at once when I installed the heads, so I can't really tell you what the heads were worth alone, but I will say that with Hooker Super Comp headers, the AFR heads, a Comp Xtreme Energy 262 cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap, and MSD Distributor/6AL and 3.55:1 gears, that my car pulls, screams, and any other way you want to describe tearing up the road.

That sounds just about like my setup without the AFR's have you had it down the track. I would be interested in any numbers you might have power wise. Thanks,

I'd also like to know if you have any HP estimates for your motor. I'm currently rebuilding my 68's 289, and plan on sticking a set of the non-emissions AFR 165's, RPM Air-Gap, Comp Cams 282s cam, and an appropriately sized carb.

Dyno2003 Engine Simulator says that combo will give me a wicked 405hp @ 7000rpm, and 358 lb.ft. @ 5000rpm. I'm sure that estimate is rather generous, but if it's even close to that I'll be very happy. I can get some really nice numbers with a custom cam that's only slightly different than the 282s, but a custom cam might cost a pretty penny in comparison.

Mine, with a new cam, gave me 65 more RWHP hp...dyno verified.

Definitely do the cam while your in there. Senseless to put on those heads if your not going to take advantage of them. I would stay away from a solid lifter set up though, unless you plan to race the car...a lot. Hydraulic technology is so good, and it is hard to rev much more than 6,000-6,500 on the street anyways, that it really doesn't pay to go solid. In fact most pro engine builders will tell you that solid set ups are pretty much a waste for the street. The guys I see that have solid set ups run wild set ups that are not very street friendly. Cars they only drive on Sat. mornings to the show. Choice is yours, just ask around and do some homework. No need to pay for something that is not going to repay you with any useful benefits. Not to mention the AFR's are only good to .550 lift max, I would be going more that that with a solid set up fo sho!
