Why black-out the rear of a S197?

It is a poll. Why would anyone like the black paint on the rear lid of their car?

Why would anyone do anything to their car? Secondly, I doubt it's paint. It's a magnet.

Sorry, I was going to post a poll, but the site decided it would lock up during the process.

The black on the rear lid on my Mustang is a tribute to the Mach 1 and Boss 302 cars of 1969/1970.

The red thing is just to hide the tag.

I like the look. I want one also... & sequentials. I read on another forum that the magnetic ones arrive rolled up & some have had problems straightening them. The woman doesn't think it would look good on my car. I have the shaker & want the black chin spoiler,too! I think it would be a good look....

i plan on doing the honeycomb to match the grill and doing a shaker. i love the 69 stangs, so awesome and legendary looking.

I apologize. I was at work earlier goofing off and apparently not paying attention. I thought you were using someone else's picture and asking why someone would do it. I didn't realize it was your car when I looked at your avatar. So, is that really painted? It looks good.

painted looks alot more professional. if i were to do a flat black look i would definitely paint it. did you use actual black and then use a flat clear coat or did you just use a rattle can?

I can make them in vinyl and they'll adhere a lot better than a magnet.

The paint shop did it with black and clear. I have a paint gun in my shop, but my work looks like crap.

I needed new paint on my race car so I had the shop use the paint code from the '07 Mustang. Did I mention torch red is the fastest color?

You ask why would anyone do that, yet you have it done to your car? lol I'm a bit confused by that, but I agree with most: It's to give it the retro look.

By the way: The magnetic ones do come rolled up. The one on my car is magnetic, but I had no issues getting it on my car. It was a cheap mod, and looks great. It has a little bit of gloss to it, though; if it was flat black, I'd like it more. If my car ends up in the body shop for any reason, I'm going to get it painted.

However, for $20, you can't beat the magnetic panel! It's easy to install, clean, and cheap to replace. I've bottomed out the speedometer on my car, and it stays on there just fine.

I have the magnetic panel. It works pretty good. I have some very fine scratches on mine when I had it IN the trunk...something rubbed against it.

I would consider doing a vinyl application....not permanent, and looks better. Paint is rather scary (permanent to some extent).

I do like the look quite a bit. I rotate mine out from time to time....stock....to black...and back....

It's a retro thing, look at the 69-73 mustangs. Most of them had honey comb rear panels, chin spoilers, black hood scoops, wing and rear window louvers (69-70). My Favorite stangs are the 69-70 and I wanted to pay tribute to that era so that’s why I did it to my car (and I think it looks good to).

The 197 is a retro style and the blackout makes it more so.

+1. I bought vinyl in satin black. Found a dish plate to use as a template to cut a hole the same size as the faux gas cap.

Looks great and won't come off unless I choose to remove it.

I just bought one of the magnetic kind. Can't wait to see what it looks like on. If anything I got it just to set the car apart from all the others.

I've thought about getting black aluminum rear window louvers and a black rear spoiler and then having a abs black honeycomb rear panel or black magnet rear panel would make sense especially if I could get a black real shaker hood (all inspired by the '69/'70 Mach 1) but until then I prefer the clean look of a Tungsten Grey painted rear panel.

dave that paint is awesome. in your sig it has a purpleishblue tint to it. crazy what different lighting can make paint look like from different angles.
